Incumbent serves as Park Mechanic for the St. Joseph County Parks & Recreation Department, responsible for maintenance and repair of Department vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities
Perform adjustments, preventive maintenance, and repairs on Department vehicles and equipment, including oil/filter changes, tire changes, tune-ups, and brake jobs. Remove, rebuild, and reinstall parts such as suspension components, hydraulic hoses, electrical parts, and switches.
Operate equipment and vehicles to diagnose malfunctions by observing, listening, and identifying the source and solution of problems.
Maintain detailed records of maintenance and repair activities, including work descriptions, parts used, and costs.
Manage inventory of parts and supplies (filters, oils, fuels, fluids, tools, service equipment); order supplies as needed and handle warranty issues with dealers. Maintain and update vehicle and equipment manuals.
Keep work areas clean and orderly by sweeping, removing trash and debris, and returning tools to proper storage.
Ensure safety devices on equipment are functioning properly and communicate safety issues with Park personnel. Assist Park staff with equipment problems as requested.
Operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools including backhoe, tractors, equipment lift, hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, air vice, power saws, ball blower, drill press, air hammer, air compressor, grinder, cutting torch, welding equipment, tap/die sets, vehicle computer scanner, fuel pressure tester, pressure washer, sand blaster, gauges, files, micrometer, driver, ratchet, steam cleaner, calipers, deburring/deflashing tools, mop, broom, and others as needed.
Maintain current knowledge of vehicles and service standards through trade literature and online research; recommend new equipment or techniques to supervisor.
Occasionally respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Reports directly to the Facilities Manager.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required. Vocational school training and/or previous mechanic experience preferred.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Ability to meet all employer hiring requirements, including passing a medical exam and drug screen.
Working knowledge of Department and OSHA safety policies and procedures, and ability to apply them.
Knowledge of Department vehicles, trucks, and equipment with the ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions and perform maintenance and safety measures.
Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to interact professionally with co-workers, other departments, vendors, and the public with sensitivity to ethics, gender, cultural diversity, and disabilities.
Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules (attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, conduct).
Ability to maintain confidentiality of department information per state requirements.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and execute verbal or written instructions.
Ability to complete and maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, safety, and accident reports.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, prints, sketches, specifications, instruments, gauges, and dials.
Ability to plan and layout assigned projects and perform simple arithmetic calculations.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision or collaboratively in a team environment, often handling multiple tasks amid frequent interruptions.
Ability to occasionally work extended hours and travel out of town for training, sometimes overnight.
Possession of a valid driver's license with a demonstrated safe driving record.
Duties performed primarily in a garage/shop environment with exposure to hazards such as heavy equipment, moving parts, noise, dust, grease, fumes, fuels, confined spaces, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and traffic. Safety equipment and precautions are required at all times.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically perform the duties of the position, including standing and walking for extended periods, working in cramped or awkward positions, lifting and carrying objects over 50 pounds, pushing and pulling equipment, crouching, kneeling, bending, and reaching. Position also requires close vision, color and depth perception, the ability to hear equipment-related sounds, and manual dexterity for handling, grasping, and manipulating tools and small parts.
