The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking two professional engineers to provide strategic leadership to a Project Engineering Office in Spokane, WA. As a Project Engineer, you will be responsible for managing the delivery of projects from design and contract procurement through construction administration and project closeout. The selected candidates will ensure all assigned projects are managed according to WSDOT policy, delivered on schedule, within budget, as well as constructible, maintainable, and cost effective. Work requires collaboration and coordination with region support groups, other regions, project offices, local, state, and federal agencies. The ideal candidate will model the core values of the Eastern Region and provide staff a balanced workplace, promoting training and development for professional growth and upward mobility, employee safety, workforce diversity, and pride in ownership.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles, the Project Engineers will:
- Empower and support a large and diverse staff including employee development and recognition, performance plans and corrective action plans.
- Implement project delivery tools too successfully deliver projects on time and within budget.
- Administer WSDOT contracts, policies and guidelines to effectively manage and monitor project level budgets and successfully negotiate/mediate contractual agreements and disputes.
- Communicate, negotiate and partner with a variety of individuals both internal and external to the agency.
- Work across boundaries, build and sustain effective teams, form partnerships with other governmental agencies and external groups.
- Lead change processes and evaluate and implement process improvements.
Qualifications
To be considered for these opportunities, the following competencies are required:
- Professional Engineering Certification: Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or licensed as a PE in another state with the ability to obtain licensure in Washington State within six (6) months of hire.
- Civil Engineering Expertise: Extensive experience applying civil engineering principles and practices across transportation, structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, environmental, and materials disciplines. Demonstrated knowledge of proper use of engineering licensure and stamping authority in compliance with Executive Order E 1010.00.
- Project Management & Delivery: Ability to manage multiple priorities while delivering projects on time and within budget. Experience with scheduling, resource allocation, and cost tracking to meet program goals. Proficient in design, development and review of plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E), and application of engineering standards.
- Construction & Contract Management: Skilled in managing construction projects, overseeing contract administration, and ensuring compliance with technical and contractual requirements.
- Leadership & Management: Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and managing transportation projects through planning, design, and construction phases. Ability to provide clear direction, support staff development, and foster collaboration to achieve organizational goals.
- Effective Communication and Collaboration: Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills to engage with internal teams, contractors, stakeholders, and the public. Capable of representing the agency in meetings and on project sites.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- A bachelor's degree in civil engineering.

- These positions require a Professional Engineers License issued by the State of Washington. License holders from other states will be expected to obtain a WA State PE license within six (6) months of hire.

- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
