CLASS DEFINITION

An Electrical Mechanic II performs skilled electrical installation, maintenance and repair work. Work of this class involves leading electrical mechanics and laborers but does not involve full supervisory duties or responsibilities.

Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek which may include evenings, weekends and holidays on a rotating basis, and are subject to 24-hour call-back as required for emergencies. Work is performed in a workshop and at repair sites where there is occasional exposure to high voltage, inclement weather, heat, heights, paint and welding fumes and cramped and dusty workspaces . Work requires lifting, bending, standing and climbing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

Education: Graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certification.

AND

Experience: Have three years of experience in electrical maintenance, installation, repair or building construction electrical work.

OR

Equivalency Notes: Have s ix (6) months of additional experience in electrical maintenance, installation or repair work or in building construction electrical work may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement .

Completion of one (1) year of the required coursework in an electrical curriculum in an accredited high school or vocational school may be substituted for six months of the experience requirement.

Successful completion of an electrical mechanic apprenticeship program registered with the Maryland Apprentice and Training Council may be substituted for one ( 1 ) year of the experience requirement.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES:

Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, installation, and repair of electrical lighting and distribution systems and other standard electrical equipment.

  • Knowledge of current national electrical codes and standards.

  • Journeyman skill in the trade.

  • Ability to operate hand and power tools used in electrical work.

  • Ability to layout routine electrical systems and to read and interpret sketches and drawings.

  • Ability to make estimates of time and materials.

  • Ability to train and deal with others effectively.

  • Ability to complete routine forms and maintain records.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

NOTE: In the Baltimore City Recreation and Parks Department: Positions require a Maryland Class A Commercial Drivers License, or an equivalent out-of-state drivers license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required and eligibility to obtain a Baltimore City drivers permit is required.

Employees may be required to provide their own hand tools.

BACKGROUND CHECK

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.

PROBATION

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month.

ELIGIBILITY

Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.

EDUCATION ACCREDITATION

Applicants education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.

SELECTION PROCESS

The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. It is essential, therefore, that you give complete and accurate information on your application. EXAMINATION PROCESS
