Maintenance Welder Job Summary

Performs welding repairs and installation of new weldments on power block and solar field equipment and systems. Performs fabrication cutting, grinding, and heating procedures, mechanical repairs, other craft work and labor as required to support overall operations and maintenance activities. Performs in both scheduled and emergency situations. Adheres to proper safety procedures. Incumbents may be assigned to work rotating shifts covering 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays and overtime as required.

Maintenance Welder Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs "GTAW, "SMAW" and "GMAW" welding repair and fabrication work as directed.
  • Able to pass API/ASME/AWS Welder Certifications
  • Performs cutting, welding, or heating procedures as required.
  • Performs all work safely.
  • Maintains a clean work area and vehicle.
  • Performs all tasks assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Completes material requisitions in a complete and accurate manner.
  • Writes complete and accurate accounts of work performed onto work orders.
  • Operates heavy equipment as required.
  • Functions as mechanic when required.
  • While working rotating shifts all meal periods and breaks shall be considered as paid, on-duty time. The employee will coordinate work activities with coworkers and the supervisor, as appropriate, to facilitate the applicable meal and break periods.
  • While working rotating shifts, 12 hours per day, all meal periods and breaks shall be considered as paid, on-duty time. The employee will coordinate work activities with coworkers and the supervisor, as appropriate, to facilitate the applicable meal and break periods.
  • Advises Maintenance Supervisor of any abnormal or unusual equipment operating condition.
  • Performs rigging tasks for crane and hand winch lifting.
  • Erects and disassembles scaffolding as required.
  • Installs insulation on piping and equipment as required.
  • Supports Emergency Response Team activities as required.
  • Understands and operates facility to maintain all compliance requirements. Notifies Supervisor/Manager or appropriate agency if compliance exceedance occurs.
  • Completes assigned training requirements.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Maintenance Welder Skills

  • Ability to carry out detailed instructions with limited supervision.
  • Ability to use logical and divergent reasoning to solve problems.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively with others.
  • Ability to maintain clean work area and neat, accurate logs and journals.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to read, interpret and retrieve information from technical drawings, specifications and manuals.
  • Ability to learn and execute emergency response and firefighting techniques.
  • Ability to operate, monitor and analyze problems with assigned equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Willingness to assist in training other personnel as directed.

Requirements

Maintenance Welder Prerequisites

  • High school education or equivalent, plus 5 years' work experience as a welder in an industrial environment, to include 2 years of fabrication experience.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must pass practical welding test, conducted on site in the 6G position using pipe coupons.
  • Tests must pass visual inspection by ASIs Authorized Inspector (AI) and are subject to bend or X-ray testing at an independent test facility.
  • Capable of performing "SMAW" and "GTAW" welding processes as applicable to carbon steel, low alloy steels, and stainless steels (predominantly austenitic S.S. series 300).

Essential Functions of the Job

Ability to perform light physical work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a frequent basis, and 20 pounds of force on an occasional basis, performing tasks requiring manual dexterity (such as keyboard and ten-key device operation), and such activities as grasping, lifting, reaching, crouching, standing, walking, running, climbing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, sitting, and repetitive tasks. The ability to discern assorted colors.

Working Conditions

Works in a remote solar power plant environment. Potential exposure to hot, cold, sudden change of temperature, dry, wet, dusty, dirty, quiet, noisy, and working alone or with others. Potential hazards include CTS, minor cuts, falls, eyesight and hearing impairment. Safety critical position.
