Paving Superintendent

The Paving Superintendent oversees and coordinates all aspects of asphalt paving operations to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with quality standards. This role involves supervising paving crews, managing equipment and materials, liaising with project managers and clients, and ensuring adherence to safety and environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Project Planning & Execution

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate all paving activities for assigned projects.
  • Review project specifications, blueprints, and schedules to determine material, equipment, and workforce requirements.
  • Ensure that paving work meets contractual requirements, quality standards, and customer expectations.

Crew Supervision

  • Lead, train, and motivate paving crews, ensuring efficient workflow and high productivity.
  • Assign daily tasks and monitor performance to ensure quality workmanship.
  • Address and resolve on-site issues in real-time.

Equipment & Materials Management

  • Oversee the setup, operation, and maintenance of paving equipment.
  • Monitor material usage to prevent waste and ensure timely delivery to job sites.
  • Coordinate with suppliers for asphalt, aggregate, and other materials.

Safety & Compliance

  • Enforce safety regulations and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Conduct pre-shift safety meetings and inspections.
  • Ensure compliance with all OSHA, DOT, and environmental requirements.

Quality Control

  • Monitor paving operations to ensure compliance with thickness, slope, and compaction specifications.
  • Identify and address deficiencies immediately to prevent rework.
  • Collaborate with quality control teams to verify test results and make adjustments as needed.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate project logs, daily reports, and timesheets.
  • Communicate progress, issues, and needs to project managers and stakeholders.
  • Track and manage project costs to avoid overruns.

Work Environment

  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Extended hours during peak paving season, including nights and weekends.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and operating heavy equipment.
