This position is based at Xcel Energy Denver HQ offices on a hybrid (3 days per week in office) work schedule.

Position Summary

Support the vision and strategic plan of the department by supervising and directing a team of Designers and/or CAD Operators, ensure consistent and effective use of standard tools and processes, and serve as a strong communicator of key strategic and operational changes. The position may also supervise and direct other non-engineering personnel who support the department's objectives. The position will be responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of the team, including review of designs/solutions, making job assignments, coordinating with other departments, and employee development.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Direct the work of the team by prioritizing and assigning work, developing goals and targets, and monitoring results. Evaluate team performance; monitor trends and take corrective action where appropriate. Identify continuous improvement opportunities and drive adoption of process changes through effective communication of expectations and objectives. Foster a culture that supports and drives collaboration, diversity, and employee development. May review and approve work done by designers under direct supervision. May approve work orders.

  • Represent the department as the point of contact for and establish effective working relationships with internal and external customers and coordinate departmental activities with those customers.

  • Support and actively participate in the development of individual team members through training, mentoring, and succession development. Manage performance through goal/expectation setting, feedback, and recognition. Establish and communicate clear performance expectations and motivate team members to achieve goals.

  • Provide performance feedback for employees under direct supervision. Assist department manager with hiring and disciplinary decisions. May serve as hiring authority for some or all direct report positions.

  • Perform administrative duties, including approval of expense reports and IT requests.

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate degree in Drafting and Design or equivalent from an accredited college or technical school or experience that demonstrates equivalent knowledge.

  • Six years of technical experience in one or more of the following utility or infrastructure areas: telecommunications, electric, gas, steam, water/sewer or transportation or other related industries.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use Windows operating system, Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, Access, etc.) and computer-aided drafting applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership/supervisory experience, notably in power/utilities

  • Proficiency in Bentley MicroStation software Experience in high voltage electric substation/transmission line design

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $82,800.00 to $117,600.00 per year
