Utah Valley University is seeking two part-time Assistant Supervisors to join our Theatre Department's Scene Shop team. In this role, you will work under the guidance of the Scene Shop Supervisor to supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in a collaborative, hands-on shop environment. You will play a key role in designing and building scenery and props for department productions, contributing to the creative process from concept to stage. This position offers the opportunity to share your technical expertise, foster student growth, and be part of an engaging, team-oriented production environment.
- Designs, engineers, and constructs theatrical scenery performance spaces according to plans produced and within guidelines set by the technical directors. Collaborates, develops, and enforces safety and workplace standards, policies, and procedures. Rigs soft goods, flats, and set pieces using theater grids and fly systems.
- Supervises, manages, and trains student crews in a shop environment for all construction, load-ins, and strikes. Collaborates with the shop supervisor, the technical director, and the department chair to recruit and hire crew members.
- Operates and maintains shop equipment, supplies, tools, fabricating equipment, and scenic inventory.
Graduation from an accredited institution with an Associate's degree in theater (technical, design, and/or construction) or a related field, OR any combination of education and/or experience related to the position summary totaling a minimum of two years.
Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in theater (technical, design, and/or construction) or a related field, OR any combination of education and/or experience related to the position summary totaling a minimum of four years. Knowledge
Knowledge of scenic construction shop equipment, processes, and techniques.
Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry and their scenic applications.
Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
Knowledge of and proficiency in computer-aided drafting programs (CAD). Vectorworks preferred, but not required.
Knowledge of and proficiency in scenic painting techniques.
