Project Designer (Reports to Senior Manager of Design)
Position:
We are looking for an experienced Designer to join the Retail Design, Development, and Build Team and help drive the pipeline of new stores nationwide.
This position will assess new locations for prototypical fit, design accurate layouts in collaboration with internal stakeholders, execute design concepts and construction documents in accordance to the current prototypical details.
This position will report to the Senior Manager of Design and work directly with the Director of Retail Design, Development, and Build, and will have a high impact on the entire store development cycle. Our Client Experience Stores (SES) are our direct-to-consumer outlets and are the pinnacle of our Client Electronics America Brand.
The Retail D+D Project Designer is responsible for the overall planning, execution, and completion of retail design projects, ensuring they are on time, within budget, and meet all quality and safety standards.
This role requires a strong understanding of architectural development and build processes, excellent leadership and communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
The Design Manager will work closely with architects, engineers, contractors, subcontractors, and vendors to deliver successful retail spaces.
Scope Overview:
- Oversees all build solutions for Retail Design projects, coordinating with internal stakeholders
- Manages project Architects and Vendors
- Reviews construction drawings for accuracy and compliance
- Tracks project progress and reports status updates
- Works with Construction Manager and Fixture Development PMs to complete projects
- Develops 2-D drawing documents and simultaneously builds 3D models/renderings
Specific Responsibilities:
- Project Coordination Scope - Assist the Senior Manager and Design Director in coordinating all phases of retail design project, including initial drawing and as-built site reviews
- Develop and manage budgets, track expenses, and forecast costs. Negotiate contracts with Architects and agencies. Control costs throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring projects are completed within budget. Prepare and submit regular budget reports.
- Create and maintain project schedules, ensuring timely completion of milestones and overall project deadlines. Monitor schedule adherence, identify potential delays, and implement schedule recovery plans.
- Build the knowledge of Client's details with all consultants (e.g. AORs, engineers, etc.) as well as the real estate, construction, facilities and procurement teams. Also, keep a watchful eye for optimization and value engineering opportunities.
- Assess new locations to ensure compatibility with the current store prototype, working with AORs design acuity and flagging any potential issues prior to project site groundbreaking.
- Act as part of the architectural design team across critical milestones for new stores starting with site assessment, layout and concept reviews, construction documents, and permitting.
- Manage the coordination of fixture fabricators with the Fixture Development team/Vendor and general contractors for proper execution
- Problem solve with innovative solutions to accurately represent Client's brand. Ensuring a brand approved solution is met, keeping the project on track without impacting design and build standards.
- Engage stakeholders around design changes. While developing expertise on store operational needs. This includes work around store refreshes and renovations based on operational needs, by evolving the most cost-effective and least disruptive solutions possible.
- Communicate effectively across all internal stakeholders, including real estate, construction, procurement, HQ, and operations as well as external consultants and vendor,s to ensure constant updates and visibility with project schedules and status.
- Manage weekly job reports, including work progress, costs and scheduling updates for Architects
- Provide executive leadership readouts of work progress by site, complete status reports, and deliver construction presentations, as required
- Manage project handoff and coordination activities from Architects to Contractors
Background & Competencies Required:
- Bachelor's degree in architecture, interior design.
- Bachelor's degree and 3+ years in architecture, interior design.
- Bachelor's Degree and 5+ years of experience as a Project Manager in retail architecture design.
- Proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, 3-D Studio Max, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Preferred project management software proficiency.
- Solid experience with construction documents with an obsession for details.
- Strong understanding of construction processes, building codes, and safety regulations.
- Design administration experience, managing multiple projects at once.
- Excellent presentation, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Customer service aptitude and willingness to work as part of a team.
- Able to multitask, to meet various deadlines, and handle shifting project priorities.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team. A team player with leadership abilities.
Physical/Mental Demands:
Work is generally performed in an office environment.
Operate a computer keyboard and view a video display terminal between 50% - 95% of work time, including prolonged periods.
Requires considerable (90%+) work utilizing high visual acuity/detail, numeric/character distinction, and moderate hand/finger dexterity.
The movement and transportation of equipment, most of the time, is under 25 pounds.
Performs work under time schedules and stress, which are normally periodic or cyclical, including time-sensitive deadlines, intellectual challenge, some language barriers, and project management deadlines. Machines, tools, equipment, and work aids include PC's, printers, copiers, faxes, and other equipment commonly associated with an office work area.
May require working additional hours beyond the normal schedule.
