Job Summary

The National Safety Manager oversees and manages the safety functions across all business units of the organization. Areas of focus include worker safety and fleet safety in the plants and on the road. This includes but is not limited to evaluating and monitoring safety hazards, developing strategies to control risk, and ensuring compliance with applicable government regulations (DOT, OSHA, federal, state, and local). The Safety Manager will work across departments to develop and maintain a strong safety culture while managing the national and regional Safety teams.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintain and champion the Company Safety Purpose statement and corresponding safety manual, and ensure that all departments adhere to safety policies and procedures
  • Develop accountability measures and goals for reducing risk and injury in the workplace. Document goals and develop quarterly reporting for measuring progress
  • Supports the roll-out and ongoing maintenance for the company's Dashcam program
  • Evaluates, supports, and coordinates safety training for all workers, keeps all safety training logs up to date and in compliance with OSHA standards
  • Ensure managers and supervisors have the appropriate accident prevention and investigation training
  • Provide leadership in developing measures and practices that prevent accidents and ensure compliance with OSHA standards, such as Lock Out Tag Out and appropriate SOPs as required
  • Recruit and maintain a national Company Safety Team to discuss multidisciplinary approaches to resolving safety issues to reduce driver accidents and Workers' Compensation claims
  • Works with each sharpening center to appoint regional Safety Team members as a subcommittee of the national Safety Team
  • Ensures that proper procedures are followed for Hazard Communication and that applicable Safety Data Sheets are available
  • Develop and enforce PPE standards
  • Coordinate First Aid training to meet standards (i.e., 1 for every 20 employees)
  • Files all Worker's Comp claims and Driver Accident claims
  • Provides weekly status updates on all Workers Comp claims resulting in lost work time to Human Resources and Payroll
  • Coordinates claim completion with managers, employees, and the insurance company, follows claims through completion
  • Tracks all recordable injuries for OSHA reporting, publishes yearly OSHA form 300 for all facilities
  • Maintains all training certificates on file for forklift drivers, coordinates training with Warehouse managers as needed
  • Takes the lead on safety audits or inspections
  • Work closely with the Operations department on any updates and changes needed to equipment, procedures, or facilities
  • Work closely with Regional, SAM's, AM's and Sales managers on all safe driving initiatives
  • Seeks out educational opportunities to keep knowledgeable of current trends and laws

Requirements

Competencies

  • 3-5 years of experience working in a safety role in a manufacturing setting
  • Experience with safe driving programs and Driver Dashcams
  • Strong understanding of OSHA compliance and reporting
  • Degree or equivalent experience and certifications in Human Safety or a related field
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus
  • Extreme attention to detail
  • Ability to work accurately in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to prioritize and plan work activities as to use time efficiently
  • Strong Microsoft Word and Excel skills
  • High ethical standards and the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Character to thrive in a very dynamic and rapidly growing environment

Physical and Visual Activities

  • Must be able to frequently communicate and constantly have visual acuity
  • Must be able to constantly operate computers and office equipment
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time, may occasionally stand and/or move about the building and/or reach, bend or twist
  • Can travel as needed (25%)
