Job Description

We're seeking a Civil Engineer with ten (10) or more years of civil site engineering experience and leadership skills that are searching for an opportunity to join the Civil & Geotechnical Engineering (CGE) group at American Electric Power (AEP).

What You'll Do:

This position is responsible for leading the development of transmission line proposals, as well as supporting engineering and design activities for AEPs competitive and special projects portfolio, with a focus on large 765kV transmission buildouts. The Staff Engineer will oversee the proposal development for competitive project bid windows across the United States. This will involve coordinating a matrixed team of engineers to create design alternatives and evaluate options to enhance the competitiveness of project bids. Additionally, the Staff Engineer will support project teams in executing any projects awarded to AEP. The role also includes collaborating with Standards engineers to develop new engineering concepts, as well as coordinating with engineers from Joint Venture partners.

Qualified candidates shall possess knowledge of civil site engineering principles through education and/or demonstrated project experience related to:

Site Grading

Stormwater Management

Drainage Design/Analysis

Roadway Design

Erosion and Sediment Control

Permitting

Retaining walls

Surveying

Desired software knowledge/experience:

Autodesk Products - Civil 3D / InfraWorks / ACC

Hydraflow/HydroCAD (or equivalent) stormwater design software

Travel (~10%) is required for this position and will consist of trips to the field to diagnose civil engineering issues related to electric transmission lines and substations. Field assignments are generally within a 5-hour driving distance of the assigned office location. Some OT may be required.

What We're Looking For:

The Staff Engineer has typically acquired ten (10) or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET*; or eight (8) years of related engineering experience along with a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET*.

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico** is preferred for this position unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP.

*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Acceptable alternative is:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.**

*ABET accredited program requirement may be waived at the discretion of VP or Executive level and above based on relevant qualifications and experience.
