Position Title: Grounds Supervisor

Reports to: Director of Facilities and/or Assistant Director of Facilities

Supervises: Grounds Crew Members, others as assigned to grounds, student workers.

Primary Function: The Grounds Supervisor position is a working position. The Grounds Supervisor is responsible for the maintenance and care of all campus grounds and landscaping, athletic and recreational fields, sidewalks, roads, parking lots, trails, storm sewer systems and other related areas to provide a clean, safe, and attractive campus.

Must be able to work with and have daily interaction with a diverse group of people including Archabbot, Prio, President, Vice President(s), administrative staff, faculty department heads, students, tradesmen, contractors, vendors, custodians, public, salespersons and others as required.

Education:

  1. High School Diploma or GED required. Associate degree, or vocational or technical school degree in related subjects desired.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Minimum of 3 years grounds experience with 1 year supervisory experience.
  2. Experience with athletic field turf maintenance, horticulture, and landscaping.
  3. Must achieve pesticide applicator license within six months of hire.
  4. Must possess a valid PA drivers license.
  5. Ability to read and write English language. Good communication skills both written and oral.

Essential Duties:

  1. Assess maintenance needs and recommend appropriate actions including long range planning and budgeting.
  2. Utilize the work order system to prioritize, plan and schedule work. Develop schedules to minimize overtime.
  3. Maintain and repair equipment, vehicles, and tools. Develop preventative maintenance tasks and schedule for grounds equipment.
  4. Select and purchase equipment, parts, supplies, and materials required for grounds maintenance.
  5. Responsible for safe working conditions and work procedures of staff. Understand and direct how to follow safety precautions and procedures both verbal and written.
  6. Manage safe use, storage, and disposal of pesticides, fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and other chemicals used.
  7. Able to operate equipment such as excavators, power tools, chainsaws, manlifts, backhoe, mowers, snowplows, etc.
  8. Maintain lawns and trails including seeding, fertilizing, mowing, trimming, irrigation.
  9. Spray lawn and landscaping beds for weed and pest control.
  10. Responsible for snow and ice removal from roads, sidewalks, parking lots, stairs, and turf field.
  11. Remove leaves, fallen branches, grass clippings and debris from campus.
  12. Provide landscape and horticultural care of landscapes throughout campus including constructing new landscapes.
  13. Support athletic department to prepare for events. Maintain and groom playing fields, tennis courts, fencing, etc.
  14. Maintain and repair roads, parking lots, curbs, sidewalks, storm sewer system, signs and banners.
  15. Support for bon-fires, including preparing and delivering firewood.
  16. Provide support for Steeler Training Camp, including installing security fencing, installing tent flooring, moving furniture, trash pickup, etc. Coordinate with Pittsburgh Steelers grounds and field maintenance staff.
  17. Move furniture as requested including to and from storage. Receive, unload, and deliver items to campus buildings.
  18. Set up and cleanup support for events, deliver tables, chairs, etc. to rooms, fields, and other locations.
  19. Trash removal from campus grounds and buildings. Includes hauling trash to dumpsters, litter pickup, recycling.
  20. Construct and maintain hardscapes such as walkways, patios, and walls.
  21. Responsible for small animal control, i.e.: skunks, groundhogs, cats, etc.
  22. Must respond to off-hours calls, work overtime, work weekends and nights to complete scheduled or emergency work including weather-related call-ins.
  23. Contact and oversee outside contractors or vendors performing work on campus.
  24. Perform other duties as assigned.

Special Challenges and Environment:

  1. Must have physical ability to lift heavy objects. Work involves considerable physical activity including lifting, pulling, pushing objects weighing 50 pounds or more. Must have the ability to walk, stand, climb, and bend for extended periods of time.
  2. Work involves exposure to hot and cold temperature conditions, dirt, dust, noise, fumes, odors, rain, snow.
  3. Able to climb ladders, work from heights, work from manlifts.
  4. Working environment may include exposure to hazards, such as chemicals, and physical risks that are mitigated by and require following safety rules and precautions, utilizing appropriate Personal Protection Equipment.
  5. Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
