Position Purpose
The Project Manager Lead is a working manager responsible for leading a team of project managers within the Metal Fabricating Division. This role ensures successful execution of fabrication projects while developing and coaching project managers in the fundamentals of project management. Approximately 70% of the time will be spent on team leadership and development, and 30% on direct project management responsibilities.
Position Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Development (70%)
- Manage, mentor, and coach a team of project managers, fostering growth in project management fundamentals and leadership capabilities.
- Conduct regular one-on-one and team meetings to review performance, provide feedback, and align on goals.
- Develop training plans and career development paths for team members.
- Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and collaboration.
- Support resource planning and workload balancing across the team.
- Manage key performance indicators (KPIs) such as On Time Shipment, Performance to Estimate (PTE), and Net Promoter Score (NPS).
- Project Management (30%)
- Review project proposals and plans to determine time frames, funding limitations, procedures, staffing requirements, and resource allocation across project phases.
- Establish work plans and staffing for each phase, assigning duties, responsibilities, and scope of authority to project personnel.
- Direct and coordinate project activities to ensure progress remains on schedule and within budget.
- Schedule and/or purchase major equipment and tools required for project execution.
- Coordinate subcontractors, shop fabrication, and manpower requirements.
- Maintain project budgets and oversee cash flow management, including billing coordination with accounting and follow-up on past due accounts.
- Prepare and review status reports for budget analysis, modifying schedules or plans as needed.
- Handle all project documentation including contract administration, change orders, delivery schedules, labor tracking, and close-out materials such as O&M manuals and warranty back charges.
- Consult with in-house engineers, estimators, and field/shop personnel to provide technical guidance and resolve operational issues.
- Develop and process estimates and proposals for key accounts, maintaining strong customer relationships through regular communication and on-site visits.
- Attend and/or set up job meetings, expedite equipment, and monitor job progress.
- Ensure compliance with ISO procedures and support a safe, lean work environment.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with engineering, estimating, shop teams, and other internal/external stakeholders to resolve technical issues and ensure project alignment.
- Provide technical guidance and support to project managers and stakeholders.
Summary of Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- 5+ years’ experience in project management, preferably within a metal fabricating environment.
- Demonstrated leadership and coaching experience.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and lead through influence.
- PMP certification is a plus but not required.
