Nature of Work

The Transportation Worker 3 Equipment Operator will be assigned to the District Equipment Shop and will report to work daily in Harrison or Doddridge County. Under general supervision, performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. Operates motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow. Makes major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures. Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters. Responsible for maintaining equipment maintenance including but not limited to cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs related work as required, including flagging, erects traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. Performs other related duties as required.

The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Drivers License (CDL).

In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver's License is required.

Pay Grade 11H

Hourly Rate: $17.5313

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

Transportation Worker 2 - Mechanic

Perform maintenance, minor repairs, and minor overhaul on gasoline powered equipment.

May work with components on diesel-powered equipment.

Changes and repairs tires on vehicles and heavy equipment.

Install windshields and door glass.

Service components of chassis assembly.

Repair hydraulic brake systems.

Inspect vehicles for compliance with state regulations.

Drives equipment after repairs to test operation.

Assists higher level mechanics in heavy equipment repairs.

Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment.

Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required.

In the area of assignment of Mechanic, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Skills and Knowledge

Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.

Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.

Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades.

Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.

Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.

Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.

Ability to climb high steel structures.

Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.

Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.

Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).

Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.

Minimum Requirements

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Mechanic: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience as an automotive mechanic servicing either gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles or equipment.

Mechanic Experience Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
