King County International Airport/ Boeing Field is looking for an experienced painter who is a team player with excellent customer service skills. The work of this painter position will include striping on the airfield pavements, roads, ramps and aircraft parking areas . An Airport Painter requires necessary experience and training to balance work orders and be capable to respond to shifting priorities in a safety sensitive work environment. The painter must have strong communication skills to interact, collaborate and prioritize problems with coworkers, customers and management in a demanding fast paced environment . Additionally, these duties must be completed simultaneously providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers of the Airport. Airfield paint work products must meet FAA markings standard and contribute to accurate, safe, reliable and efficient marking systems for Airport users and tenants.
ABOUT KING COUNTY INTERNATATIONAL AIRPORT MAINTENANCE SECTION:
The Airport Maintenance section is responsible for providing maintenance and light construction services at Airfield facilities, structures, and grounds at King County International Airport / Boeing Field. The maintenance section is a multi-trade shop comprising of journey level trades, technicians and semi-skilled laborers. Airport staff is accountable for working together and providing the inclement weather and emergency response support needed for the airfield and related facilities. Under these conditions, tradesmen and technicians are expected to support airfield operations performing tasks that fall outside typical craft assignments. Work is performed in a dynamic safety sensitive environment.
Job DutiesPRIMARY JOB DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Perform journey level painting activities including interior/exterior facility painting, airfield painting, and striping duties as a member of an integrated team.
- Prepare and treat a wide range of surfaces using appropriate tools for cleaning, prepping, and applying various coatings to the interiors and exteriors of buildings, facilities, amenities, equipment, and furnishings
- Operate, clean and maintain various pieces of equipment related to striping and the application of paint coatings.
- Use stencils, line strip equipment, layout techniques, taping and masking.
- Use water blasting equipment to prep and clean surface paint markings
- Prepare time and material estimates; order materials and supplies; schedule equipment, labor and materials for each project. Prepare progress reports on jobs; maintain materials and labor cost records.
- Assemble scaffolding, operate equipment such as high lift, scissor lift, forklift and power tools.
- Finish drywall with various texture techniques.
- Ensure proper use, storage, handling and disposal of all hazardous, chemical and paint materials.
- Read and interpret plans, layouts and color specifications.
- Identify, comply with and be familiar with FAA federal regulations as they pertain to airfield markings on Airports.
- Perform record keeping (daily logs) including pre and post trip vehicle inspections. Document maintenance and repair activities on work orders and maintain detailed paint logs for airfield striping work.
- Instruct and provide guidance to semi-skilled labors. May perform a variety of other Airfield/Airport specific tasks including participation in inclement weather and Airport emergency response situations as needed.
- Use two-way radio and cell phone for communications.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the standard practices, materials and tools of the painting and striping trade.
- Knowledge of paints, varnishes, enamels, paint removers and their properties and application.
- Knowledge of preparing, mixing, blending, harmonizing and contrasting colors.
- Ability to paint pavements, signage, markings, airfield structures, fixtures and, equipment to exact FAA specification.
- Skill in accurately applying paints and other finishes with brushes, striper or spray gun(s), selecting proper materials, mixing and matching paints, working at heights from ladders and scaffolding, and completing time and material estimates. Ability to calculate material needs over surface distance, area, or size.
- Ability to be organized on the job site, in the shop and in an office setting.
- Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and can also work independently and in a team environment.
- Must be able to clearly express, receive, and confirm both oral and written instructions; follow directions delivered via radio, spoken word, or written format; and communicate accurately and effectively using aviation terminology across multiple radio systems and handheld devices.
- Ability to have predictable and reliable attendance.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and precautionary measures to be observed for the painting trade, construction, maintenance, or other industrial areas with the ability to work efficiently and safely in a very busy, demanding airfield environment under sometimes stressful conditions.
- Ability to learn airport safety rules and obtain blue badge within 3 months
- Ability to exercise proper situational awareness in demanding conditions (i.e., working in close proximity to landing, departing and taxiing aircraft; precautions during day/ night operations, etc.).
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior airfield and parking lot or road/highway striping experience
- Prior commercial, residential, industrial or marine painting

Necessary special requirements:
- Candidate must pass an annual airfield driving test and first aid CPR class within 3 months of hire.
- Selected applicant will be required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination.
- Must possess a current and valid driver license
The successful candidate will need to successfully demonstrate the following:
- Ability to lift, carry, move, or handle up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to perform duties involving physical labor including bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, and twisting.
- Ability to perform work outdoors and in inclement weather.
- Skill in performing math functions for painting and striping trade.
- Ability to properly lift 50 100-pound buckets of painting material and safely move 55-gallon paint drums.
- Ability to walk for extensive distances pushing striper equipment.
- Ability to distinguish between colors, shades, and textures.

Work schedule: Typical schedule will be 4/10hr/days that may include a Saturday or Sunday, swing shift or night shift. Schedules are subject to change to meet Airport operational need. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. Additional hours may be required depending on the workload, projects or emergency response support required of this position. Mandatory overtime will be assigned as well as alternate shifts in order to meet the operational needs of the Airport, projects, striping season and weather.
