Summary

Under general supervision, the Water Maintenance Operator performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City's water distribution system. This position is a tentative At-Will appointment and subject to a probationary period of six (6) months from the date of hire. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, a non-management employee shall be granted regular status in the classification in which the probationary period is served.

Essential Functions

Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Excavates for mains and services by using hand tools or pneumatic equipment or cleans trenches made by trenching machines.
  • Performs a variety of maintenance, construction, and repair work on water mains, hydrants, meters, and related water services.
  • Operates dump trucks, jackhammers, air compressors, backhoes, loaders, and hand tools.
  • Helps repair various machines by making adjustments and handling tools as directed.
  • Reads gauges and meters; maintains operating log according to schedule.
  • Checks equipment for proper operation and makes minor adjustments as directed.
  • Maintains and repairs the chemical feed system.
  • Collects samples for chlorine residual and bacteriological analysis in accordance with Federal, State, and local requirements or as needed for operational process control.
  • Responds to water main and line leaks, bursts, and other emergencies.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge of:
  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Work safety policies, procedures, practices, and equipment.
  • Traffic control procedures including flagging laws.
  • Laboratory procedures including chemistry and bacteriology tests as related to water treatment.

Skill in:

  • Using and maintaining a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Following written and verbal instructions.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Maintaining accurate records and logs.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines High school diploma or GED equivalent AND one (1) year of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water mains; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Must possess a valid Arizona drivers license. Must possess a valid commercial Arizona drivers license or obtain license within six (6) months of employment. Must possess a Grade I Water Treatment or Distribution certification or obtain certification within six (6) months of hire.

Physical Demands/Working Environment

Work is performed primarily outdoors and requires exposure to potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazardous chemicals, infectious diseases, and outdoor weather conditions. May be required to work in confined spaces and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
