Job Description
Dates of Need: 9/1/2025-11/30/2025. This job requires a minimum of (3) months of general farm labor. A valid drivers license is preferred but not required. The lifting requirement for this position is 60 pounds. General Farm Work will include the following duties: Worker will be required to perform a variety of duties related to the production of corn, hay, and triticale. The majority of the work activities during the overall contract period, however, will be related to general farm work/irrigation/crop production/hauling crops on or between worksites.
General Farm Work will include the following responsibilities: maintain, drive, attach, and operate farm implements/tractors/equipment to till soil, plant, cultivate, fertilize, and harvest crops; make minor mechanical adjustments and repairs on farm machinery; clean equipment, implements, tools, vehicles; etc.; may mix and/or spray chemicals (according to appropriate restrictive use laws, when/if applicable); remove undesirable and excess growth from crops or farm grounds; remove rocks from field; paint/repair/maintain farm structures; replace/maintain/repair fencing; perform general cleanup of farm areas; drive, load/unload farm trucks and Ag exempt, non CDL, 10-wheel trucks on, or between, farm worksites; husk/shell/de-tassel corn; operate weed eater; mow and/or burn weeds; operate equipment to pack silage, triticale, alfalfa (haylage); cover/uncover feedstock or compost pits with plastic and tires; haul and spread manure/compost/crops; move feedstock/compost; maintain farm roadways; operate vehicle, motor bike, or all-terrain vehicle in the course of performing duties; workers possessing the proper licensure may be asked to transport other farm workers.
Instruction, training, and general supervision will be provided by the farm operator or a designated employee. However, the worker must perform required duties without close supervision and listen to, understand, and follow simple instructions of the employer or supervisor. The worker will be required to return worn out tools, supplies, and equipment before new ones will be provided. Most duties are performed out of doors and entail exposure to heat, cold, dust, rain, and other environmental conditions common in fields, including mosquitoes during certain seasons. The worker must crouch, bend, and lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds in the course of performing required activities. The worker may be offered work seven days a week, as farm work must be performed seven days a week. The worker will be required, however, to work the minimum number of hours indicated in the job listing. The worker may be offered more than the specified hours per day, but is only required to work the hours specified. The worker may be requested, but will not be required, to work on his/her Sabbath and/or on Federal holidays. Extended hours may be required during peak production periods. Work hours may vary and there may be periods when little or no work will be available due to weather, time of year, and the requirements of the cropping program.
Wheel Lines:
1.Start gasoline engines and operate controls to move lines across fields at specified intervals
2.Hook up wheel lines to water supply
3.Move wheel lines when needed
4.Fix and repair broken wheel lines so that they are in an operational manner
5.Fix and repair any water leaks on wheel lines so that they are in an operational manner
Pivot Irrigation
1.Push on switch that activates circle sprinkler system
2.Turn on/off pivots
3.Learn and master operating a pivot
4.If a pivot is stuck, get it unstuck and in operating condition
5.Roll up/unroll pivot hoses
6.Unplug plugged up nozzles
7.Unplug plugged up hoses
8.Replace broken nozzles and hoses
9.Maintain operation of a pivot at optimum level
Other Irrigation Duties
1.Remove pipes/wheel lines from storage and lay out/place in predetermined patterns in fields
2.Lubricate, adjust, repair, and replace parts such as sprinkler heads and drive chains using hand tools
3.Observe revolving sprinklers and adjust to ensure proper operation and uniform distribution of water
4.Disassemble, service, and store pipe/mainlines/wheel lines after irrigation season
5.To meet minimum acceptable performance standards when irrigating, the worker must, after a 10-day conditioning period, move an average of at least 48 40-foot sections of 3-inch pipe per hour under normal working conditions.
6.Operation of center pivot irrigation system. Standard repair and maintenance duties as required such as replacing and maintaining nozzles, hoses, pipes.
Employees working in corn fields should wear long sleeve shirts, pants, gloves, hi-visible vest, eye protection and closed toe shoes/boots as corn can scratch and irritate skin.
-Most of the required positions are outdoors. It is imperative that the employees understand that job duties may be performed in rain, snow, wind, freezing temperatures and/or high humidity, and hot temperatures of approximately higher than 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
-It is imperative that the employees understand that they may work in fields when crops are wet and have dew on them and should have proper clothing for all weather conditions.
-During hay and corn harvests the operation runs 24/7 and the employer runs at least two shifts. Employees may be asked to workday or evening shifts.
-These positions require strenuous and repeated bending, standing, walking, & being on your feet for hours at a time.
All other duties assigned.
Workers may never ride on agricultural equipment not designed for work related riding purposes or any other non-passenger intended equipment unless instructed and authorized by the employer or supervisor to do so.
Workers with valid driver's licenses and that are insurable may transport workers, equipment or crop.
All work-related injuries must be immediately reported to the crew leader, foreman, or supervisor.
Employer-paid drug test is required if a worker has an accident at work.
If light duty work is assigned for a worker's compensation injury, the worker will be expected to return to work and perform the light duty work upon advice from a physician and the workers compensation insurance company.
Full Growing Season Commitment: The job offered requires that the worker be available for work every day and that work is available for the full period of employment. The worker agrees to be available for work and performs the assigned work for the assigned employer whenever work is available through the full period of employment.
Training: There will be a demonstration period to familiarize workers with job specification and to demonstrate proper harvest methods and other crop specific issues.
The anticipated hours listed represent the normal work schedule. Due to the nature of these crops, weather, and the requirement to send crops to customers when needed, it is the prevailing practice to work more or different hours than those listed. When the number of hours for a week exceeds the number listed, the worker may be offered, but not required, to work more hours. Saturday work may be required.
A worker may be offered more than the specified hours of work; however, the worker will not be required to work for more than the number of hours specified in the job order, or on the worker's Sabbath or Federal holidays. Saturday work may be required.
Workday start times vary depending on the weather. depending on the time of year, hours of daylight, and production requirements. There may be periods when little or no work will be available due to weather, time of year, and the requirements of the cropping or growing season. Workers are notified if there is a change of work hours or work schedule.
Workers must be able to work varying shifts as required by the season and work performed. Workers are notified of any change in the start times. Work may be performed during rain, light snow, cold, freezing temperatures and/or in high humidity and in temperatures over a 100 degrees F.
Workers must possess requisite physical strength and endurance to repeat the harvest process throughout the workday. Workers must work at a sustained, vigorous pace and make bona-fide efforts to work efficiently and consistently that are reasonable under the climatic and all other working conditions.
