Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Perform structural evaluations of bridges, culverts, and retaining walls to assess condition and load capacity.

  • Develop rehabilitation and strengthening solutions for existing bridges and transportation structures.

  • Assist in the design of new bridges and modifications to existing structures to meet updated codes and safety standards.

  • Conduct load rating analysis and ensure compliance with AASHTO, CDOT, and FHWA requirements.

  • Prepare as-built drawings and technical reports based on field assessments.

  • Conduct field inspections, which may involve working from lifts, scaffolds, confined spaces, and bridge structures.

  • Research historical and current bridge design codes and standards to determine necessary upgrades.

  • Develop detailed drawings and specifications for bridge repair and replacement projects.

  • Provide construction support services, including reviewing shop drawings and responding to contractor inquiries.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering (Master's degree preferred).

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or ability to obtain P.E. license within 1 year.

  • 3-5+ years of structural engineering experience, preferably with a focus on bridge design and rehabilitation.

  • NHI Bridge Inspection Team Lead training strongly desired or willingness to take the course.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and structural analysis software (experience with MicroStation, SAP2000, AASHTOWARE BrR, and CSI Bridge is a plus).

  • Experience with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and CDOT standards.

  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for field visits.

  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, including load path analysis and material behavior.

  • Ability to perform structural calculations, determine load ratings, and assess performance criteria.

  • Experience preparing technical condition reports, design plans, and bid documents.

  • Strong report writing and documentation skills, with the ability to communicate findings clearly.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with project teams.

  • Experience managing multiple projects and deadlines, ensuring QA/QC and regulatory compliance.

  • Ability to interact professionally with clients, agencies, and contractors.

  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop innovative and cost-effective solutions.

Physical Demands, Overtime, and Travel:

  • Physical Demands - Work is performed in an office setting and at inspection sites. Field assessments may require walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, working at heights, and entering confined spaces. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds may be required.

  • Flexibility - Hybrid work schedule 2-3 days per week following initial 3 month probation period requiring full time in-office attendance.

  • Overtime - This is a salaried, exempt position. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

  • Travel - The role requires up to 10% local/regional travel, with occasional overnight stays for inspections and site visits.
