TRAFFIC SUPERINTENDENT: To manage, direct and coordinate the activities of assigned sections of the Traffic Division including traffic signals, sign installation and pavement markings; to coordinate section activities with other sections, divisions and departments; and to provide highly complex staff assistance to the Assistant Public Works Manager/Traffic.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general direction from the Assistant Public Works Manager/Traffic.
Exercises direct supervision over supervisory, technical, maintenance and clerical staff.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL RESPOSIBILITIES AND DUTIES- Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Plan, prioritize, review and assign the work of assigned staff involved in installation of complex traffic signal control equipment and systems, signs and markings; provide direction and training as needed.
Participate in and recommend the appointment of personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; evaluate employee performance; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures; recommend employee terminations.
Participate in the preparations for division budget; assist in budget implementation; participate in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; administer the approved budget.
Recommend goals and objectives for assigned section; assist in the development of polices and procedures.
Direct, oversee and participate in the development of the division workplan; assign work activities, projects and programs as directed; monitor work flow; implement policies and procedures; review and evaluate work projects and programs as directed; monitor work flow; implement policies and procedures; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
Assist with the more complex installation and repair functions of traffic equipment including signals, signs and markings.
Interpret plans and work orders to determine and confirm proper placement of traffic control devices; identify location of utilities and other work hazards prior to digging.
Order and maintain equipment, parts and supplies for assigned work unit.
Respond to emergency calls as requested.
OTHERS IMPROTANT DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
Participate in the work of subordinate staff; assist in the installation of traffic control devices.
Prepare and maintain a variety of files and filing systems; maintain and update various records including service calls.
Participate in a variety of activities involving travel between various city facilities and to other related external business and government agencies which may include site inspctions and traffic equipment installation, repair and maintenance.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Methods, materials, tools, equipment, procedures, practices and the theory used in the construction, operations, maintenance and repair of traffic equipment.
Basic principles and practices of traffic engineering principles.

Principles and practices of construction and maintenance.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be
Experience :
Four years of increasingly responsible professional traffic engineering experience including at least one year of supervisory responsibility.
Training:
Equivalent to an Associates degree from an accredited college. Prefer a Bachelor's degree with major course work in civil engineering or a related field.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid Mississippi drivers license.
