The Plant Operator is responsible for operating, maintaining, and performing repairs on critical assets throughout the plants campus-wide in such manner as to eliminate system downtime and ensure optimal client relations. Essential Functions
- Maintain & Repair Rotating Equipment
- Inspect, align, balance, and rebuild centrifugal & positive-displacement pumps, blowers, gearboxes, and air compressors.
- Replace bearings, seals, shafts, couplings, and gaskets; verify tolerances with micrometers, dial indicators, and vibration data.
- Valve & Piping Infrastructure Maintenance
- Disassemble, lap, repack, and rebuild gate, globe, butterfly, ball, and check valves.
- Cut, thread, weld, and flange steel, copper, stainless, and PVC piping; repair leaks and install pipe supports to applicable industry standards.
- Utility System Operations
- Operate and service boilers, centrifugal chillers, cooling-tower cells, water softeners, compressed-air dryers, and associated controls to minimize downtime.
- Monitor pressures, flows, temperatures, lubrication levels, and vibration; log data, interpret trends, and correct deviations before failure.
- Predictive & Preventive Maintenance
- Perform oil analysis, ultrasonic and vibration checks, laser alignment, and thermography on rotating assemblies.
- Follow CMMS work orders; generate parts lists and improvement recommendations to extend asset life.
- Mechanical Troubleshooting & Fabrication
- Diagnose mechanical faults using schematics, P&IDs, and root-cause tools (5-Why, fishbone).
- Fabricate brackets, guards, and small structures with drill press, lathe, mill, and MIG/TIG welding equipment.
- Chemical & Water Treatment Support
- Sample cooling-tower and boiler water; adjust biocides, inhibitors, and softener regenerations to control corrosion, scale, and microbiological growth.
- Safety, Heights & Access Equipment
- Work safely on mezzanines, rooftops, and inside pits; routinely climb ladders and operate scissor and boom lifts according to OSHA/ANSI standards.
- Lock-out, tag-out, and verify zero energy before servicing equipment; maintain housekeeping in mechanical spaces.
- Instrumentation & Controls Assistance
- Calibrate pressure, flow, and temperature transmitters; assist electricians/controls techs in loop checks and field device replacements.
- Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Update CMMS records, lubrication routes, and parts consumption; participate in reliability and 5S events to drive uptime and efficiency.
- Other Duties as Assigned
- Support cross-functional maintenance tasks and emergency response to ensure uninterrupted plant operations and excellent client relations.
Minimum Requirements
- High School graduate or GED
- A minimum of 2 years of plant or mechanical maintenance in a commercial or industrial setting.
- Knowledge of standard practices of the mechanical trade.
- Knowledge of applicable building codes, ordinances and regulations.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations
- Knowledge of basic record-keeping techniques.
- Skill in using hand and power tools.
- Must be authorized to work in the US
Pay: $24.00 - $30.00/hr
The pay listed is the salary range for this position. Any specific offer will vary based on the successful applicants education, experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, and alignment with market data.
Shift: Monday Friday 3:00pm-11:30pm
