style="margin: 0 0 8pt">The overall function of this position is to provide assistance to the Parish Highway Maintenance Superintendent in the management of maintenance activities. This position is located in District 62, Tangipahoa Parish, Unit 550 and may be required to work in St. John the Baptist Parish Unit 580 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Parish Highway Maintenance Superintendent. Direct line supervision is exercised over Mobile Equipment Operators. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. "While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives."

Four years of experience in the construction, maintenance, or repair of roads, bridges, levees, drainage facilities, wharfs, buildings, or grounds; OR Four years of experience in the operation or maintenance of industrial or heavy mobile equipment. Job Duties:

60% Supervises and assists crews that do machine mowing, hand trimming, brush cutting, site clearing, hand spraying of herbicides, digging and grading and cleaning of ditches, and other roadside maintenance.

10% Completes daily work reports and checks equipment forms.

10% Supervises and assists crews that do pothole patching, machine leveling and hand levelling, cleaning and reshaping of ditches, clean decks and drains, and hand clean intersections.

5% Supervises and assists crews that perform tree removal and litter cleaning on roadsides.

5% Operates equipment.

5% Occasionally, fills in for the Parish Highway Maintenance Superintendent or for the Highway Foreman 1 (Road Foreman).

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including but not limited to, emergency/ disaster call out or support activities.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: This posting is open to current permanent classified employees of DOTD only. This position may be filled as a Probationary Appointment requiring 12-24 months on probation.

Work Location: This position is located in District 62, Tangipahoa Parish, Unit 550 and may be required to work in St. John the Baptist Parish Unit 580 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Parish Highway Maintenance Superintendent.

Work Schedule: 10-hour days, off Monday or Friday.

Compensation: The starting salary for Highway Foreman 1 is $24.10 hourly.

The incumbent is required to possess the following specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, as well as to maintain the following licensing and operate the following equipment:

  1. Maintain class A CDL.
  2. Ability to coordinate and complete machine mowing, pothole patching, machine leveling, hand leveling, cleaning and reshaping ditches, clean decks and drains and hand clean intersections.
  3. Ensure all equipment is serviced and cleaned as well as operated correctly.
  4. Position is subject to random drug testing.
  5. Must operate DA in connection with Linear Assets.
