Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Veterans Home Commandant, the Buildings/Grounds Supervisor plans, inspects and supervises field and facilities operations on the WVHUG campus. The incumbent provides direction and hands-on support of maintenance units, to ensure work is performed timely and in compliance with Life Safety Codes and nursing home requirements; directly supervises staff, performing the full range of civil services supervisory functions; oversees purchasing functions; and tracks and maintains the operational budget.

Salary Information

Starting salary is between $68,640 and $72,800, depending on candidate qualifications, plus an attractive employee benefits package.

Buildings/Grounds Supervisor is in pay schedule-pay range 81-04.

Pay will be set in accordance with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan in effect at the time of hire. Pay for current State employees will be set per applicable provisions in the Compensation Plan.

This position is not represented by a bargaining unit.

Job Details

This position works an 8-hour shift Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The exact schedule can be discussed at time of hire. The position requires working weekends and holidays on a rotating basis and on call as needed to meet WVHUG operational needs.

The incumbent must meet the requirements to operate a State of Wisconsin Fleet vehicle.

Job duties include bending, squatting, stooping and crawling; carrying objects weighing up to 75 lbs.; climbing stairs and ladders; lifting, moving, and installing objects using a two-man lift; performing heavy lifting work; occasionally exerting more than 100 pounds of force to move objects; and performing heavy manual labor.

Due to the nature of the positions, WDVA will conduct a criminal background check prior to an offer of employment.

Employment in this position is contingent upon passing a pre-employment tuberculosis (TB) skin test.

A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Qualifications

In their resume, minimally qualified applicants will provide details about their experience:

  • Performing facilities maintenance (e.g., cleaning, painting, replacing parts, repair, construction, light plumbing, light electrical, waste removal, snow removal, clearing walkways, etc.); and
  • Interpreting and following Life Safety Code (e.g., occupancy limits, fire egress, existing structures, new structures, hazards in environment, etc.)

Well-qualified applicants will also provide details about their experience interpreting and following nursing home regulations (e.g., physical environment, design, construction, liquid gas storage, patient rights and privacy, etc.).

Additional required and preferred experience that will be assessed later in the selection process are:

  • Maintaining and repairing heating-ventilation-air conditioning (HVAC) systems and equipment; and
  • Leading and/or supervising staff; and/or
  • Managing programs and projects; and/or
  • Establishing & developing teams; and/or
