Summary: Operates equipment and may lead crews engaged in operating a variety of gasoline or diesel powered motorized equipment; and performs related work as required. Equipment used by Heavy Equipment Operators typically includes (but is not limited to) mowers, tractors with bulldozers or angel-dozer blades, front end loaders, backhoes, tandem dump trucks, semi-tractor trailers, hydraulic dredges and other heavy equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Thorough knowledge of state traffic laws and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of computers.
  • Skill in the operation of a variety of heavy construction equipment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend maps.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance and make minor repairs.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment.
  • Ability to lead others.
  • Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, etc;
  • Ability to comprehend and abide by safety practices.
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with citizens, park guests, employees and supervisors.

  • Ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity.
  • Operate equipment engaged in complex and routine maintenance and construction projects.
  • Interprets construction plans.
  • Performs routine operations, to include excavating, gouge cutting, leveling, demolition, stump clearing, sloping, spreading, stripping, and pushing trees and rocks from land preparatory to renovating roads, landscaping and site development.
  • Drives semi-tractor trailers hauling sludge, trash or petroleum.
  • Transports heavy construction equipment to designated locations.
  • Prepare travel records.
  • Performs equipment maintenance, such as changing oil, checking fluids, diagnosing tread wear, replacing batteries and troubleshooting problems.
  • May serve as a supervisor leading a team in the absence of a supervisor worker over a crew of laborers.
  1. Cleaning and maintenance of equipment and tools used throughout the daily course of work.
  2. Assist with mowing, edging, weed eating and blowing of all assigned areas.
  1. Basic understanding of mechanical operation of all equipment and ability to communicate to mechanic and repairs or maintenance needed.
  1. Removal of all debris, including tree branches, tires, dead animals, furniture, car parts and any other unwanted debris that is left within City Park.
  2. Reporting of graffiti, large debris, or other unwanted items on park grounds so they are immediately addressed.
  3. Assisting other team members and departments as necessary
  1. Monitors and evaluates all areas throughout the park to ensure grounds maintenance is consistent with all other contracted and other labor responsible for grounds care in the park.
  2. Assist with street cleaning, drain clearing, and other non-turf care tasks as needed.
  3. Supports and actively promotes New Orleans City Park’s safety programs.
  4. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
  5. Ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and group situations.
  1. Spraying of herbicides under supervisor guidance.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Active and Unsuspended Driver’s License
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions including extreme heat.
  • Previous experience related to lawn care and grounds maintenance.
  • Previous experience operating large heavy equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods, move about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another, communicate with others to exchange information, repeat motions that may include wrists, hands, and/or fingers, operate machinery, motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and power tools. The employee is occasionally required to ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and poles. Reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, and fingering are requirements of the position. The employee will exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects in all directions.

The employee is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. The ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound is required.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus and is required to have the visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to inside and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; wind, moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, high, precarious places; fumes, dust, mist, odors, gases or airborne particles and poor ventilation; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat of temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than an hour; risk of electrical shock; explosives and noise, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is constantly noisy.
