About the Position
This position provides entry level engineering design and construction support for the unit. Work typically includes utilization of most of the practices and methodologies of the agency under the supervision of a fully-operational Professional Engineer or Project Engineer. May be assigned tasks of increasing responsibility requiring originality and judgment. This position builds upon basic engineering theories, concepts, and principles; attains Engineer Intern registration, if they do not already have it; and progresses toward a professional engineer license. The position designs projects or programs and performs inspection for highway construction projects. Completed engineering work is reviewed by higher level engineers.

Under the guidance of a Licensed Professional Engineer y our duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Construction Inspection and Oversight
  • Document and approve progress and final contract payments due for work completed and accepted by reviewing pay documentation prepared by staff and by overseeing and checking cumulative payment reports and authorizations compiled by computer programs.
  • Conduct inspections of construction project work including field observation, testing of materials in accordance with established Colorado and industry testing procedures, and measuring and documenting work and quantities.
Project Design and Development
  • Prepare and design engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates for roadway construction projects.
  • Assure quality and consistency of project design plans and procedures by applying good engineering judgment and a wide variety of design and construction manuals, spreadsheets, forms, design aids, computer software, and Department procedures.
  • Use engineering practices and calculation methods that meet CDOT and AASHTO guidelines.
  • Develop practical applications of professional engineering processes, theories, laws, principles, and techniques related to highway engineering.
Project Management
  • Assists the project manager on design and construction projects to gain experience in all aspects of contract and project administration.
  • Attend review meetings to ensure that plan, design, and construction transportation projects comply with engineering and regulatory guidelines.
  • Identify engineering and project objectives, anticipated complex features, problems, and possible solutions.
  • Maintain official project records by receiving, reviewing, and assuring the proper logging, distribution, and filing of all related documents.
Consultant Management
  • Administer contracts or monitor consultants management of transportation projects with oversight from the Resident Engineer. This includes monitoring and reviewing schedules, scope, project expenditures, resolving problems and negotiating / creating task orders.
  • Assist with development of scope of services and initiation of task order in coordination with Resident Engineer and Region 2 Business Offices practice guidelines.
  • Monitor and approve consultant charges and recommend payment for completed work.
  • Assist with negotiation and recommend approval of task orders or supplemental contracts required for consultant services.
  • Participate on consultant selection panels when requested by the Resident Engineer.
  • Assist with coordination for clearances, construction inspections, and plan review.
  • Review contract documents delivered by consultants and learn to compare with project and CDOT process requirements.
Materials Inspection and Testing
  • Assist the Project Manager or Project Engineer in managing coordination with several different local government agencies and stakeholders.
  • Interact with Local Agencies and other non-CDOT stakeholders regarding projects on the state highways system.
  • Coordinate with CDOT specialty units and internal departments to make sure the design and construction of projects meet State and Federal standards.

Work Environment
  • Travel required during work hours to project sites, meetings and trainings.
  • Required to work nights, weekends and holidays during construction season.
  • Occasional overnight travel for meetings or trainings (4-6 times per year).
  • Exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force regularly.
  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.
  • Contact with water or other liquids; or exposure to nonweather-related humid conditions.
  • Proximity to moving, mechanical parts.
  • Exposure to electrical shock.
  • Working in high, exposed places.
  • Exposure to radiant energy.
  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation that may cause irritation to the respiratory system, eyes, or skin..
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles.

Education:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or engineering technology, preferably civil engineering.

Transcripts must show that a degree in engineering has been conferred.

Substitution:

  • Current enrollment as a licensed Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors may substitute.

  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training I must obtain enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors, hereafter referred to as the Board, within three years of appointment to the position. Individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training I must also obtain licensure as a professional engineer by the Board within eight years of appointment to the position.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment.

  • Within 12 months of hire required to obtain certifications as a Traffic Control Supervisor, and as an Erosion Control Supervisor.
