As a Welder I (trainee), you will be responsible to plan and perform a wide range of welding operations as required in the assembly, fabrication and/or repair of company products and parts following standard or accepted methods and procedures. Incumbent may be assigned to any production area to perform any functions requiring the skill levels specified and authorized for this position. Incumbent expected to support all company programs such as Lean, 5S, TPR, etc.
This position will be in the Belle Chasse, MGX Equipment facility and report to the Operations Manager.Essential Job Functions:

  • Successfully pass AWS D1.1, 3G & 4G within 12 months of starting employment.
  • Maintain certification by using the process at least once in a six-month period.
  • Use portable power and hand tools to remove machining burrs, rust scale and other surface irregularities from a variety of machined, plate or welded parts, components or units.
  • Bevel or radius edges, smooth and blend surfaces, radii, angles and other features, clean holes and threads, prepare parts and units for prime and finish painting; perform other duties to clean and smooth parts.
  • Frequently operate overhead crane to move parts and components.
  • Interpret and understand shop floor work instructions.
  • Exercise care in operation and handling of parts to avoid damages to machined surfaces, removal of excess metal or required features and to obtain specified surface smoothing and blending of features.
  • Detect and report defective materials and faulty operation; refer questionable matters to proper management.
  • Other duties as determined by supervision.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to identify parts and materials
  • Use process and set up sheets
  • Complete and maintain required paperwork
  • Ability to read standard measuring devices to the nearest .0312 (1/32")
  • Ability to read and interpret routine welding and fabrication drawings; use and interpret measuring devices such as rule, scale, square, protractor; ability to use and understand fractional, decimal and metric measuring methods.
  • Understand basic geometric dimensioning & tolerances
  • Perform basic shop math
  • Read and use a standard and metric conversion chart
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely operate overhead cranes and jib hoists
  • Operate small hand and power tools
  • Able to pass pulmonary function test where required
  • Safely operate gas heating and burning equipment
  • Familiarity with welding methods and techniques, equipment, set up and operation.
  • Familiarity with assembly and fabrication practices.
  • Preheat / Post heat parts per procedures using temperature sticks

  • Specific vision abilities include color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

This position is located on the production shop floor, in multiple buildings. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use tools or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand, reach, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Incumbent will work in a typical fabrication environment including the use of solvents, adhesives, hydraulic oil, petroleum products, etc. There is frequent lifting and/or moving of up to 50 pounds.
