Laborer/Spotter - 616 - Landfill

This is manual work in grounds, building, equipment, and landfill maintenance and operation activities. As work experience is gained, employees may be assigned to somewhat more difficult tasks and/or cross-trained to assist and serve as a backup for the Equipment Operator I position. Work is performed under the direction of a supervisor who issues general instructions for routine jobs and specific instructions at the beginning of each new job when departures are made from established procedures.

The days and hours for this position is: Monday - Friday 7:00am - 5:30pm and alternating Saturdays 7:00am - 5:00pm

  • Directs traffic at and around the working face of a construction and demolition (C&D) landfill.
  • Monitors and sorts materials brought into a C&D landfill.
  • Assists skilled and semiskilled workers in varied building maintenance and repair activities.
  • Shovels snow and breaks ice from streets and walks.
  • Assists Equipment Operators in performing equipment maintenance.
  • Completion of work assignments will require operation of a vehicle.

  • Ability to acquire within a reasonable period knowledge of the procedures, tools, equipment and materials used in landfill work.
  • Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.
  • May require the ability to enter data into computer spreadsheets or other software.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to shovel snow, sand, gravel, dirt, and/or compost.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to airborne environmental nuisances associated with traffic and machine exhaust, open grounds, and landfill operations.
  • Ability to tolerate equipment and machinery noise with the use of ear plugs.
  • Ability to safely and effectively swing a 20-pound sledgehammer safely and effectively against brick, concrete, or similar substances.
  • Ability to lift and carry bulky items weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 150 pounds with the assistance of another.
  • Ability to pull, shove or otherwise maneuver items weighing up to 150 pounds.
  • Ability to be continuously performing tasks that require one to push, pull, climb (ladders and in and out of vehicular equipment), bend, twist, reach, stand, and walk about (up to a half mile at a time) for most of a ten-hour shift.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to wear safety toed boots and other personal protective equipment as required.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License. within 90 days of hire.
  • This position will require working outdoors in inclement weather including but not limited to, rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, and humidity plus emergency response operations that may include operating equipment and vehicles on overnight shifts, weekends and in low-light and low visibility conditions, or other adverse weather conditions.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
  • Must be 18-years of age or older.
  • Ability to acquire a valid Kanas Driver's License within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Preferred Experience and Training

  • High school diploma, GED, or vocational degree in equipment operation and/or construction.
  • 6 months of experience in landfill, construction, landscaping, and jobs involving physical and manual labor.
  • A valid Kansas Drivers License.
  • A valid Kansas Class A or B Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) speaking ability.

Please note that this position is part of a random drug testing pool, and employees are subject to random drug testing in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.

Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
