The Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered City automobiles, light trucks, and vehicular equipment using industry-standard repair criteria.

Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic (D)-II positions are differentiated from Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic(C)-II by levels of repair and required certifications. This position requires a Class-D Driver's License, as differentiated from a Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic(C)-II, which requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Three years directly related work experience and/or training in the repair of gasoline and diesel vehicles.

Education and/or experience preferences: Trade school as a Mechanic; experience with Manufacturer Electric Vehicles.

Driver's License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: none

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: At least one ASE CertificationKnowledge: Gasoline and diesel engine repair and maintenance; Policies and procedures related to safety including occupational hazards and safety precautions; Operational requirements and safety practices associated with the tools and equipment of the trade.

Skills: The use of tools and equipment used in automotive drivetrain repair and maintenance.

Abilities: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, employees, other departments and the public. Safely operate City vehicles, equipment and tools. Work paperless with computerized fleet management system. Express one's self clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. To carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Write routine reports and correspondence. To use math concepts to contribute data for charts, graphs, and presentations; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: This position communicates with the supervisor or administrative and office assistant for administrative, technical, and parts assistance. Employee communicates with City employee customers to assess vehicle and equipment repairs. Employee maintains professional relationships while fostering a collaborative team environment. External: This position communicates with vendors to secure parts and materials in a timely manner. Employee presents a professional, courteous image for the City to the general public, customers, and public officials. The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs comprehensive preventive maintenance, lube/oil/filter, diagnostic, emissions, and safety inspections on gasoline and diesel engine-powered city vehicles and equipment using diagnostic equipment and electronic technical data.
  • Performs in-shop; performs minor repairs in the field; provides wrecker service for disabled vehicles.
  • Installs new equipment and decals; performs required welding and fabrication.
  • Performs in-chassis or bench/stand overhaul to engines, transmissions, transfer cases, gear cases, axle differential assemblies, hydraulic cylinders and pumps.
  • Performs diagnostic to all OEM style computer-controlled systems and able to understand and read performance codes for troubleshooting these systems for replacement and repair.
  • Inspects, services, repairs/replaces: Body parts, examples: bumpers, door handles, hardware, interior components, trim, mirrors, windows; Brake system (hydraulic and pneumatic) components, examples: brake shoes and pads, calipers, hoses and lines, master cylinders, hydro boost systems; Cooling system components, examples: heater cores, hoses, radiators, thermostats, water pumps; Air Conditioning systems including A/C lines and hoses, O-ring replacements, filters, evaporators, dryers, condensers replacement of all A/C components as necessary including evacuation of Freon from R-134 A and R-1234A systems; Drive train components, examples: axle shafts, drive shafts, power take-offs, shift controls; Electrical components, examples: alternators, batteries, lighting, starters, switches; Emergency response gear, examples: light bars, computer mounts, gun mounts, sirens; Engine parts, examples: belts, hoses, gaskets, valve covers, intake/exhaust manifolds; Exhaust system parts, examples: catalytic converters, exhaust hangers, exhaust pipes, mufflers; Fuel system components including all gas fuel injections systems, diesel injection systems, filters, injectors, pumps; Hydraulic system, examples: cylinders, filters, hoses, and valves
  • Interior parts, examples: dashboard parts, interior panels, seats, seat belts, steering wheels; Steering parts, examples: steering column, steering gear, steering pump, tie rod/tie rod ends; Suspension parts, examples: control arms/control arm bushings, shock absorbers/struts, springs; Identifies and requests parts and supplies needed for repair work.
  • Operation of a Dealer/Independent Shop work order management system, desktop or laptop computers to document work orders, research parts, or access vehicle and equipment technical reference data.
  • Maintains and cleans work area. Cleans, maintains, and stores shop tools properly. Advises supervisor of missing or broken shop tools and broken or damaged equipment.
  • Complies with occupational and workplace safety requirements. Complies with hazardous waste and environmental programs.
