Salary
- Support Salary Scale Grade S12: $30.11 per hour; starting
Under the Fair Labor and Standards Act this position is non - exempt from overtime. Actual salary placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Frederick County Public School System. Please see linked salary scale for the full range.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Electrician performs complex technical work, on a journeyman level, in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of commercial electrical systems, equipment, fixtures and related electro-mechanical systems, in accordance with applicable Electrical Industry Codes, to approximately 8 - 10 assigned buildings, covering approximately 1 million square feet of space.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform daily preventive maintenance of the electrical systems in FCPS facilities totaling 1,000,000 square feet.
- Performs preventive maintenance by inspecting, testing, servicing electrical and electromechanical systems, and repairing malfunctioning equipment
- Documents the cost of repairs and services by keeping records of time and materials to be charged to each job using the work order system and providing updates to the designated supervisor regarding the status of work projects, material consumed, and man-hours utilized
- Ensures that electrical distribution systems are safe, meet the requirements for electrical power, and comply with applicable codes by maintaining, modifying, and repairing those systems
- Inspects and tests elements of electrical systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions, performs required repairs through replacement of inoperative parts or re-wiring of circuits, and provides an estimate of repair (and/or replacement) costs for work beyond their capability to perform
- Calculates branch circuit loads, interprets electrical wiring diagrams and schematics, and determines methods and requirements for wiring circuits
- Troubleshoots and repairs electric controls, motor control centers, and programmable logic controls
- Contributes the oversight and professional development of Electrician Apprentices
- Scope of the position requires working with electrical systems, wiring, and currents that have the potential for serious injury, and therefore proper safety measures must be used
- Performs work in accordance with building code, safety regulation, and trade standards of quality
- Identifies and reports hazards, and protects self and others to reduce or eliminate risk.

- Properly inspects, operates, and maintains vehicles, tools, and equipment
- Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance
- Work efficiently, demonstrating position-appropriate independence and self-direction
- Obtain and retain certification required of job classification
- Attend and participate in training, and satisfy testing requirements
- Travel frequently between facilities, operating vehicles in accordance with FCPS regulation
- Participates in meetings and training(s) in an effort to plan and execute tasks according to changing priorities and safeguard against occupational hazards
Perform daily repairs to the electrical systems in FCPS facilities totaling 1,000,000 square feet.
- Perform building tours of each facility, ensuring that all mechanical systems are operating correctly. Be able to read and review electrical schematics and drawings
Completes all administrative tasks including work orders (corrective and preventive), requests, and accounts for weekly time reports. Will be responsible for procuring purchases once they are assigned a procurement card.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Training/Experience:
- High school diploma, GED equivalent
- 3-5 years of related experience
Certification/License:
- State of Maryland Journeyperson Electrician license
- Valid driver's license and the ability to operate a vehicle in accordance with Board of Education
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Training/Experience:
- Commercial electrical work
- Familiarity with the FCPS policies, goals and programs

- The work environment requirements of this position include: exposure to inclement weather, exposure to cold water, work in confined areas, exposure to dust/fumes, exposure to hazardous equipment, exposure to electrical outlets, work at heights up to and over 25 feet, work around moving machinery, work on and off moving equipment, work on slippery surfaces, exposure to needles or sharps, use of hot equipment, and exposure to high noise levels.
