This position involves specialized skills in operating heavy construction and highway maintenance equipment within the Department of Transportation. As a Transportation Equipment Operator Specialist, you will engage in manual labor as part of a highway or bridge maintenance team while also handling a variety of machinery essential for construction and maintenance tasks. Your responsibilities will include operating equipment such as fuel trucks, rubber-tire excavators (Gradalls), milling machines, oil distributors, pugmills, and stone chippers for surface treatment operations. Additionally, you will manage larger machinery, including track excavators with a gross vehicle weight of 25,500 pounds or more, large pavers, and truck/trailer combinations for transporting equipment. Your role may also require the use of snow plows, backhoes, tractor mowers equipped with extendable hydraulic mowers or ditcher attachments, bulldozers, graders, and rollers weighing ten tons or more. Furthermore, you will operate self-propelled road wideners, conveyor loaders, pavement breakers, post drivers, and front loaders or hi-lifts with a bucket capacity of four and a half cubic yards or more, all of which are critical for effective construction and maintenance operations.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Work hours are subject to change based on operational needs.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- One year of experience as a Transportation Equipment Operator B (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Two years of experience in the operation of construction and maintenance equipment ; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the L restriction removed.
- This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiners Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
Conditions of Employment
- This position requires the employee to obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.
- This position requires the employee to obtain active operating certifications, issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for at least two of the following pieces of equipment within the probationary period or a longer period as determined by management: fuel truck, rubber tire excavator (gradall), milling machine, oil distributor, pugmill, stone chipper for surface treatment operations, track excavator with a gross vehicle weight of 25,500 lbs or more, or a large paver.
- All employees must successfully complete and remain current with Transportation Equipment Operator Instructor and Acting Highway Foreman training.
- This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
