Major Responsibilities

  • Supervise, instruct, train, and dispatch full-time employees assigned to the planting, maintenance, protection, conservation, and operation of In-House Tree Planting program.
  • Coordinate operations such as site preparation, equipment transportation, maintenance, clean up, and site restoration.
  • Establish staff schedules, coordinate overtime and emergency attendance, and ensure accurate timekeeping.
  • Secure, rent and purchase equipment and supplies. Coordinate with other Park divisions and outside vendors. Manage transportation and vehicle service issues.
  • Monitor facility, work supplies and vehicle conditions. Identify needs and coordinate maintenance and repair services.
  • Coordinate and supervise operations at In-House Tree Planting yard, including managing and scheduling tree deliveries, material deliveries, vehicle needs.
  • Assist IHTP Management, Foresters and Community Coordinator to maintain and improve work processes, track program progress and identify work supplies/equipment needs.
  • Assist program gardeners and APSWs as needed with yard maintenance, work assignments, and inventory.
  • Ensure that all safety protocols are being followed by crews. Perform site inspections. Ensure that all assigned tree planting sites and facilities are clean, safe, and organized. Correct safety hazards immediately. Conduct monthly safety meetings & track attendance.
  • Track program progress and communicate staffing, equipment, and field issues to management, including all disciplinary issues. Document vehicle accidents, incidents, and injuries, and ensure accurate and timely submission of reports.
  • Conduct necessary disciplinary actions in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Document tree, inspection, work, and crew data using ForMS Mobile and Desktop applications.
  • Attend and participate in periodic planning meetings with forestry management.

PARK SUPERVISOR - 81111

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, plus two years of full-time satisfactory experience in gardening, grounds maintenance, in the automotive trades, in the building construction or maintenance trades, or as a climber and pruner or tree worker performing climbing and pruning duties. One year of this experience must have been in a supervisory capacity; or

  2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above; including one year in a supervisory capacity; or

  3. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience that is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. Two years of college education may be substituted for one year of the required experience. However, all candidates must possess a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and a minimum of one year of supervisory experience as described in "1" above.

License Requirement

Within one year of the date of appointment, all candidates must possess a Commercial Driver License (CDL) - Class B valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Preferred Skills

  1. Ability to perform and demonstrate all gardener duties, including proper tree planting, and operation of all forestry tools, vehicles, and machinery. 2. Strong organizational and leadership skills, and ability to motivate staff. 3. Experience training or demonstrated ability to train a group of participants. 4. Experience in or demonstrated ability to carry out various administrative duties requiring computer skills and knowledge of software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 5. Excellent communication skills. 6. Good attendance record. 7. Available to work evenings and weekends.

Residency Requirement

Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency within 90 days of hire required for all other candidates.
