This posting is for an Engineering Technician I position in the Stokes County Maintenance Unit. This position will report to the County Maintenance Engineer and will assist in the inspection of commercial driveway permits, right-of-way utility encroachments, erosion control, traffic control devices, and roadway construction. This position performs routine inspections on a variety of projects to ensure general compliance with plans and specifications. This position will submit required records, reports, and diaries within a specified time frame. Employee will be subject to both inside and outside extreme environmental conditions, as well as hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic.

  • Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involves explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad and software

Additional Expectations:

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Applicant should have general knowledge of highway construction or design and general knowledge of mathematical functions. Applicant should be skilled in the use of office equipment such as calculators, computers, and drafting software. Applicant should have the ability to read and interpret construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures. Applicant should be able to take notes and prepare routine reposts, be proficient in record keeping, and have good communication skills. Applicant should have a close visual acuity to read plan details, make accurate field measurements, and inspect roadway and structure components. Safety-toed shoes required. This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
