About the Work Unit
This work unit in Region 4 (Limon) administers transportation construction and design contracts and oversees the contractors and consultants performing the work. Design activities include developing construction plans, specifications, and preliminary estimates for advertising budgeted transportation projects along the units specified corridors. Design activities are performed by an in-house design team or administered through design consultant contracts. The designs must adhere to the guidelines, standards, and policies of the State of Colorado and the Federal Highway Administration while staying within the project scope and budget. Construction activities include materials testing, inspection for compliance with the contract plans and specifications, quality assurance and control, documentation of pay quantities, authorization of contract payments, initiation and authorization of contract modification orders, and monitoring of financial status.

About the Position
Under the guidance supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, this position will learn to apply and implement engineering principles and standards. The EIT I will learn to assist with design projects which includes: scoping new projects, estimating project costs, developing project schedules, analyzing design data, generating official reports, developing designs and documenting design decisions, preparing plans and specifications for advertisement, apply and implement engineering principles and standards.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepares quality engineering plans and specifications for roadway designs
  • Learns to apply current engineering theories and principles while following federal, state, and local design standards to develop safe, efficient, and economical project designs.
  • Learns tasks that include gathering and analysis, determining project design standards, developing 2D/3D design models, identifying items and quantities, determining specification needs, identifying ROW and Utility needs and establishing design and construction schedules and estimates.
  • Utilizes software such as Gmail, PMWeb, Bentley MicroStation/ORD, AASHTOWare, MS Project/Word/Excel, ProjectWise and SAP computer software programs.
  • Learns to manage a design project from scoping through advertisement.
  • Learn responsibilities such as defining project scope, creating communication plans, maintaining schedules and estimates, analyzing and maintaining risk registers, developing agendas and minutes, coordinating information and data handoff between Specialty Units, ensuring proper filing of critical documentation including reports and studies, and coordinating with the public and local entities.
  • Documents project decisions and information in a design notebook.
  • Learns to review plans and specifications during design and construction phases.
  • Learn to identify potential errors in calculations, geometry, and constructability issues that could lead to claims or delays.
  • Learns to prepare and maintain design schedules for all projects using CDOT scheduling software.
  • Establishes and maintains milestone dates in PMWeb based on the design schedule.
Work Environment
  • Daytime hours Monday - Friday (100% in office during training. Then opportunity for flex schedule after training)
  • Daytime travel during business hours to meetings, site visits, and industry events.
  • Up to 10% overnight travel to meetings, site visits, and industry events
  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications:
Must have a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.

Substitution:
Current enrollment as an Engineer-Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the degree.

  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training must obtain registration as a Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of appointment to the position.
  • A current valid driver's license is required for this position as it requires operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
  • The person hired for this position must be a Colorado resident by the start date.
