Job Description:

As an independent division within Barry-Wehmiller Design Group, Inc., ControlTech Automation (CTA) is a control panel integrator and fabricator for process, packaging, utility, and other industries. CTA is based in St. Louis and specializes in control panels for systems integrators and production facilities located throughout the United States. CTA can provide control solutions for a single piece of equipment, an entire process, or a complete plant. CTA has engineering design capabilities or will build panels from customer-supplied design packages.

We are seeking a Control Panel Design Engineer to lead industrial control panel design efforts and support quoting, specification, and fabrication. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in UL508A panel design, demonstrated CAD proficiency, and experience delivering compliant, cost-effective designs for manufacturing. This role spans the full lifecycle, from interpreting client criteria to supporting fabrication and requires excellent technical and organizational skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and document industrial control panels in compliance with UL508A standards
  • Create complete electrical schematics, panel layouts, and bills of materials using AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or similar software
  • Perform load calculations, short circuit current ratings (SCCR), and thermal analysis
  • Select and specify components including circuit breakers, contactors, PLCs, VFDs, and other industrial control hardware
  • Ensure compliance with NEC and NFPA 79 electrical codes
  • Interpret customer-supplied design criteria and technical documentation
  • Prepare accurate technical quotes and cost estimates, including breakdowns of materials, labor, and engineering hours
  • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, maintaining schedules and delivery targets
  • Provide redlined drawings and fabrication support during panel build and troubleshooting phases
  • Collaborate with internal engineering, sales, and production teams to ensure build quality and cost-effective design solutions

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field
  • Minimum of 3+ years experience in industrial control panel design
  • Proven knowledge of UL508A standards, demonstrated through previous compliant designs
  • Minimum 2 years hands-on experience using AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, or comparable electrical CAD software
  • Applied understanding of NEC and NFPA 79 electrical codes, with specific examples of compliant designs
  • Minimum 2 years of experience designing motor control circuits, PLC-based systems, and VFD applications
  • Documented experience preparing technical quotes and performing cost estimation for control panel projects
  • Demonstrated ability to manage design projects, meet deadlines, and coordinate with cross-functional teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with examples of resolving design or fabrication challenges
  • Proven ability to read, interpret, and create detailed electrical schematics and technical documentation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with prior collaboration across engineering, sales, or production teams
