Job Summary
Installs, maintains and repairs Fire Alarm Systems to include Master boxes, VOCO Voice circuits, Aerial and Under Ground cables. Work involves the construction, operation and maintenance of fire alarm telegraph systems, lighting and power systems. Involves working around hi-voltage electrical equipment. Involves working in an aerial bucket truck around high voltage electrical systems. Ability to work in confined spaces (underground manholes). Maintains fire alarm call boxes and pedestals; stripping paint, repairing and repainting. Works with private electrical and fire alarm contractors to install fire alarm master boxes in large businesses, apartments and residences. Must be available to work a reasonable amount of overtime and be willing to work all hours in case of emergency or fire alarm equipment failure. Includes both aerial and underground circuits. Works on City of Providence owned telephone cables (copper and fiber) and the Mesh and Canopy wireless mobile data systems.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs aerial line construction, underground cable construction and general electrical maintenance.
- Installs fire alarm boxes and pedestals.
- Repairs fire alarm boxes and pedestals; stripping, painting and repairing.
- Works OHMS Meters, Volt Meters and Tone Generators. Working knowledge of these devices essential.
- Performs diagnostics of short circuits and open circuits on both aerial and underground circuits.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the installation maintenance and repair of fire alarm systems and the private telephone systems.
- Knowledge of working safety around hi-voltage equipment in a close environment.
- Installs, repairs and maintains the city owned telephone cabling systems both copper and fiber.
- Installs, repairs and maintains the MESH and Canopy wireless mobile data systems.
- Work in aerial bucket truck near high voltage electrical equipment.
- Assists foreman with keeping records, circuit books and maps up to date. Must have fluent computer.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school, technical trade school graduate or equivalent.
- Considerable training in electrical theory with apprenticeship experience with a public utility.
- Experience working with Ohms' meters, splicing kits and power tools and drills.
- Must be available on call.
- Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
The term "limited" means that the successful candidate will perform the job for an undetermined length of time. The position may or may not become permanent.
