Position Description:

The Superintendent, Groundskeeper will direct the maintenance operations of the Grounds Department across the Belknap, Health Sciences Center (HSC), and Shelby campuses. Responsibilities include oversight of tree care, mowing, landscaping, snow and ice removal, and campus beautification projects, as well as making departmental recommendations to enhance the overall appearance of the campuses. Serve as the primary contact for multiple contracted services. Oversee the maintenance and inspection of all grounds equipment to ensure safe and effective operation. Direct the solid waste program and coordinate the recycling program. Collaborate with key university departments and participate in sustainability initiatives and partnerships.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide leadership and direction to the Grounds Department staff who are responsible for maintaining and renovating lawns, landscapes, hardscapes, and trees on the Belknap and HSC campuses. This includes managing snow/ice removal plans and services.

  • Serve as the primary contact and contract manager for multiple services, including interior pest control, snow removal, tree trimming, irrigation services, tree and turf fertilization services, solid waste removal, recycling, composting, and general grounds maintenance across all three campuses.

  • Track, compile, and present sustainability data related to the Grounds Department, including information on solid waste, recycling, tree removals and plantings, and other relevant initiatives. Participate in and collaborate with sustainability partners, including service on committees associated with the Partnership for a Green City.

  • Perform a range of administrative duties, including filling vacancies, conducting performance evaluations, approving employee time and leave requests, managing personnel matters (including training and development), addressing disciplinary actions, and resolving employee grievances per university policies and procedures.

  • Manage procurement activities, including assisting with RFPs, obtaining quotes, purchasing materials and supplies, submitting requisitions, and approving vendor invoices. Coordinate and oversee vendors for contracted work.

  • Manage employee pest control licenses and keep accurate records for the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Division of Pesticide.

  • Collaborates with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) on MSD inspections and with University Planning, Design, and Construction (UPDC) to coordinate maintenance and renovation activities impacting outdoor spaces.

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
