The Mechanic is responsible for functions of the automotive service shop by monitoring, coordinating, and improving the condition, efficiency, safety, and functionality of the Cooperative's fleet. This includes preventative maintenance, minor and major repairs of cars, trucks, aerial devices, construction equipment, and other types of equipment operated by the Cooperative. All work shall be completed in a safe, cost effective, and time efficient manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform repair work on vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose cause of any malfunction and perform minor and major repairs to manufacturers specifications including engines, computer systems, transmissions, hydraulics, suspension and steering, fuel and ignition (gas and diesel), electrical systems, brakes, and heating and cooling systems.
  • Work will be performed primarily in the company service shop, job site or an emergency roadside repair as needed. Alternative work shifts as needed during mutual aid storm restorations.
  • Fabricate parts as required including any design work needed.
  • Perform welding repair to manufacturers guidelines.
  • Perform required inspections and preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment to maximize the safety, productivity, and life of the unit. Perform DOT inspections.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on company vehicles, such as fluid changes, lubrications, and safety inspections.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on off-road equipment such as lubrications, adjustments, and safety inspections.
  • Coordinates maintenance shop inventory to ensure necessary equipment and parts levels are maintained and purchases are within budget.
  • Collaborates with Distribution Logistics Supervisor and Accounting Clerk-Purchasing to analyze maintenance cost and provide recommendations on Fleet utilization and replacement. Assists in budgeting and suggestions for improvements in the fleet.
  • Coordinates and manages outsourced repairs as needed, ensuring quality of service and parts.
  • Work with various parts vendors to find the most cost effective and timely system of delivery.
  • Work with dealers/contract vendors to line up and out source work as deemed necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Technical, vocational or trade school diploma or degree in heavy duty truck mechanics OR minimum of 4 years of experience in automotive maintenance and repair, and heavy duty truck mechanics maintenance and repair.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and working knowledge of vehicle systems, including but not limited to: hydraulic systems, gas and diesel engines, electrical systems, drive trains, and various hand tools.
  • Strong working knowledge of local, State, and Federal regulations pertaining to commercial fleet.
  • Hold and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License
  • Certified to perform DOT inspections or able to obtain certification within 6 months.
  • Proficient with hand tools, pneumatic tools, hoists, jacks, and other various shop tools and equipment used to repair and maintain vehicles and equipment.
  • Proficient in computer system diagnostics for all fleet commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to use various Microsoft Office and other company specific programs, including fleet management software.
  • Ability to research and troubleshoot vehicle/equipment problems using computer technologies.
  • High level of safety awareness with a demonstrated commitment to working safely at all times.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision and be highly motivated, customer service driven, detail oriented, and quality focused.
  • Possess excellent communication (written and oral), leadership skills, and ability to influence and make decisions by applying independent judgement.
  • Agreeable to work flexible hours when needed to complete a specific task or during emergency situations and to meet the needs of the business.
  • Provides and maintains full set of hand tools.
  • Pursues personal development/continuing education opportunities and is committed to staying current within field of work.
  • Maintain confidentiality and safeguarding of confidential material.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Welder
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in diagnosing needed repairs and maintenance of aerial devices, digger derricks, skid loaders, backhoes, and other construction related equipment
  • Understands MPCA and EAP regulations pertaining to fueling systems and hazardous waste
  • Strong knowledge of electrical; troubleshooting, and diagnostics for aerial devices, digger derricks, trailers, and vehicle wiring
  • ASE Master Certification
  • Forklift experience

Safety Class:

This position requires a valid CDL driver's license. Along with additional CDL requirements, this position is subject to pre-employment drug screens. This position is also subject to random drug screening during employment. Both screenings include cannabis and hemp-derived products.

Pay and Benefits:

Starting Pay: $36.18 - 39.20/hr
