Primary Activities and Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
- Perform general maintenance and repairs on bridges
- Set up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural steel components
- Verify vertical and horizontal alignment and bolt or weld structures are in place
- Load and unload materials and tools
Pay Rate
$38.70/hour
Training
You will attend two weeks of training at the Railroad Education & Development Institute in Atlanta, GA. CSX will pay for travel, lodging and meals as required by collective bargaining agreement.
Qualifications - External
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma/GED
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid Driver's License
- Construction experience with basic carpentry skills
- Mechanical experience
- Read and interpret structural blueprints
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL)*
- If you are unable to obtain a CDL license or at the least make significant progress in obtaining a CDL license within your sixty (60) day probationary period, CSX has the right to revoke your employment by rejecting your application. In the event you fail to obtain a CDL license or make significant progress in obtaining it and your application is not rejected, your ability to bid on open positions/vacancies will be limited, meaning you will face an increased likelihood of being furloughed.

- Welding experience
- Bridge maintenance work experience
Basic Competencies
- Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications--both general and technical)
- Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
- Reasoning skills (problem solving and troubleshooting skills)
- Mechanical aptitude
Physical Requirements
- Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
- Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an occasional basis
- Climb ladders and/or scaffolding
- Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection

Employment Conditions
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may need to be obtained based on job assignment
- Qualify to use a welding torch within 60 days of employment
- Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
- Wear protective equipment such as fall protection and rescue equipment, hard hat, hearing protection, safety-toe boots, or safety glasses
- Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work
- Complete annual training and pass safety and track worker rules examination
- May require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
- Must pass all required assessments
- Must pass a background screening
- Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including drug and physical capabilities test
- Regional travel may be required based on job assignment
- This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement, membership is required
Environmental Conditions
Work outside in all weather conditions at elevated heights and/or over water.
