Under regular supervision, operates a variety of maintenance and construction equipment and performs various skilled construction and maintenance duties in Street Departments and various Departments in the City. Work requires special skill and care around traffic areas and utilities.

An employee in this class works as a member of a maintenance crew led by a supervisor or crew leader. This employee is primarily an equipment operator; however, manual maintenance and construction tasks are also required. Responsibilities include the safe operation of equipment which may include tractor mowers, tractors with trailers, backhoes, leaf trucks, loaders, bulldozers, flatbed trailers, boring machines, rodding machines, flusher trucks, dump trucks, rollers, tamps, and other equipment and tools. On occasion, this employee may assume a lead worker role, in the absence of a supervisor. Work is performed under the general supervision of a supervisor in the division assigned. Work is reviewed upon completion for accuracy and completion of assigned tasks in a safe and timely manner and quality of work. Positions in this classification are not exempt from the overtime pay requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

All the task, responsibilities and requirements of Street General Maintenance Worker I & II.

Operates backhoe, loaders and mini-excavator in situations requiring skill and care working around underground and overhead utilities, parked cars and traffic.

Operates trucks with trailers to load, move and unload large equipment and materials.

Ensures equipment and materials are properly secured on trailer per DOT standards.

Ensures all needed signage to move over width, over length, over weight loads are on truck and copy of permit is in truck.

Operates the street sweeper on an established route requiring independence and reliability.

Operates automated and rear loader garbage truck and perform job of sanitation operator as required.

Sets up traffic control and helps ensures safe job site.

Washes and cleans assigned equipment; performs routine servicing as needed.

Uses sign software and sign making equipment to make and install signs.

Loads, transports, and unloads daily materials, supplies, and equipment; taking inventory of materials upon receipt and return.

Assists in cleanup of assigned job site.

Other related duties as assigned.

Thorough knowledge and dedication to general safety procedures; commitment to using PPE.

Thorough knowledge of MUTCD for signs and traffic control.

Working knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing vehicle and equipment operation.

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of operation medium to large size equipment.

Working knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to operate large equipment in heavy traffic and around utilities.

Skill in operation of large specialized equipment and tools used in the work assigned.

Ability to lead lower-level maintenance workers in the completion of assigned tasks, and possibly serve as crew leader.

Ability to perform strenuous work for extended periods of time.

Ability to complete basic work zone safety training.

Ability to do job site math to estimate needed materials.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and public.

Work in this position is very heavy work (exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects). Physical activities include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. The employee must have the visual acuity to operate trucks and other equipment. The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, oils, and contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids.

Position requires a valid North Carolina CDL Class A Driver License with tank endorsement, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire, completion of high school or equivalent, and some experience in assigned area of responsibility, particularly the operation of motorized equipment.
