We are seeking a Design Engineer to join our Engineering Department to support Product Development projects. This role will focus on designing and developing new products that align with Lex's growth strategy, managing projects from concept through launch while ensuring technical excellence, compliance with industry standards, and manufacturability.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily including the following:

  • Product Definition: Create, articulate, document, and refine the product requirements and specifications.
  • Design and Development: Create detailed designs for portable power distribution equipment, ensuring compliance with military and UL standards. Utilize both 2D CAD (AutoCAD) and 3D CAD software to develop accurate and reliable designs. The design engineer is responsible for creating mechanical/manufacturing/assembly drawings as well as electrical schematics.
  • Standards Compliance: Ensure all designs meet the necessary military and UL standards, staying updated on any changes to these standards and incorporating them into design processes as needed.
  • Manufacturing Collaboration: Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are feasible for production, providing support during the manufacturing process and resolving any design-related issues that may arise.
  • Dimensioning and Tolerancing: Apply precise dimensioning and tolerancing techniques to ensure that all parts and assemblies meet the required specifications and function as intended.
  • Document Control: Manage document control activities related to design work, including maintaining accurate records of design changes, ensuring version control, and ensuring that all documentation is easily accessible and up to date.
  • Problem-Solving: Address design challenges as they arise, proposing innovative solutions that balance performance, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes, seeking out ways to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of our products.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field required.
  • 3+ years of experience in product design engineering, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience designing electrical enclosures, power distribution products, or industrial electrical equipment is a plus.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software required.
  • Experience working within a structured Phase Gate or Stage Gate Product Development process preferred.
  • Familiarity with UL, NEC, and other relevant standards for electrical assemblies is preferred.

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple development projects concurrently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical documentation and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Commitment to quality, attention to detail, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative team environment within a fast-paced, deadline-driven setting.

work environment/environment conditions

This position is based in Lex Product's office in Shelton, CT. It requires the ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team. Occasional travel will be required.
