Repairs and maintains town vehicles, heavy equipment and all other public works vehicles, including front-end loaders, backhoes, various trucks and police/ emergency vehicles. Performs minor engine repair on gasoline and diesel powered vehicles. Repairs and tests brake systems, suspension systems, exhaust systems, transmissions, heating systems and cooling systems. Installs special equipment such as plow frames, lights, radios and special wiring. Performs electric, acetylene and arc welding as needed.
Performs manual labor incidental to the work of operating assigned equipment. Operates vehicles providing roadway snow removal, sanding and scraping ice. Assists in emergency highway repairs and in other Public Works related emergency repairs. Provides on-call duties during snow emergencies.
Performs heavy equipment operators duties when not assigned to mechanical work.
Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalent required. Vocational or technical training in automotive or diesel mechanics preferred. Valid driver's license is required, Massachusetts Class B motor vehicle license is preferred.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill:
Knowledge of the tools, techniques, equipment and procedures used in motor equipment repair and maintenance.
Ability to maintain records of repairs, inspections, materials and costs.
Skill in correctly lifting and carrying heavy objects.
Physical Requirements
Heavy physical effort required in performing work under shop conditions. Continuous walking, standing, climbing and frequent periods requiring sustained uncomfortable physical positions. Vision and hearing must be correctable to normal ranges. Will be required to lift up to 100 pounds.
