Equipment Operator/Sign Shop Coordinator

Under the general supervision of the Operations Manager, the primary purpose is to perform the functions and duties of an equipment operator according to the responsibilities described in the Equipment Operator job description. The secondary purpose of this position is to perform sign making and sign maintenance duties in accordance with the requirements of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and this position description. The position generally works at the Highway Department facility in Hawthorne.
Time Allocations:
It is anticipated that duties of this position will be divided between that of an Equipment Operator and that of the Sign Shop Coordinator by a split of approximately 60%/40%, respectively. It is anticipated that variations of this estimate will occur depending on needs.
The Sign Shop Coordinator is scheduled to work Tuesday through Friday during the summer season.- Perform assigned duties as an Equipment Operator prior to performing sign shop duties.
- Perform on-call Equipment Operator duties as required within the regular scope of seniority based call-outs.
- Maintain an assigned snow plow route.
- Act as primary contact person for County Highway Department and Wisconsin Department of Transportation on signage related issues.
- Obtain all required sign related training, as determined by management.
- Provide guidance and share knowledge of signing requirements to other Highway Department staff.
- Manufacture signs utilizing computer based sign making technology.
- Fulfill requests of Douglas County townships and villages for providing signs to meet their requests.
- Monitor and maintain an adequate sign and signing materials inventory.
- With the assistance of the Working Supervisor responsible for signing issues, develop, coordinate, and implement construction zone signing plans for all County Highway Department and Wisconsin Department of Transportation construction and inspection activities.
- Maintain a neat and orderly sign shop room.
- Apply vehicle door emblems and equipment numbers.
- Performs any other duties as requested and directed by the Fleet Facility Manager, the Highway Technician, the Shop Foreman, or the Highway Commissioner.

Considerable knowledge of:
- Proper and safe operation of motorized equipment
- Rules and requirements for proper signing techniques as detailed in the manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other relevant publications
- Methods and materials used in the maintenance of roads
Skills Required:
Ability to:
- Effectively operate equipment
- Read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, outside agencies, sales and factory representatives, and general public.
Physical Activities / Requirements:
Ability to:
- Regularly safely lift up 50 pounds.
- On occasion safely lift 50 100 pounds, with assistance.
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending and stooping.
- Reach and climb.
- Exposure to high noise levels and shop fumes.
- Work in varied environmental conditions including temperatures extremes, varied air quality and exposure to construction materials and fumes.
- Must pass a physical examination for the equipment operator physical requirements.
Working Conditions:
Infrequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions, as well as some moderately loud noise from mechanical or electrical tools and equipment.
HAZARDS: Limited exposure to injury and toxic roadway construction and maintenance materials.
