Software Engineer - Microservices & Kubernetes Architecture

Location: Manassas, VA

Type: Long-Term Contract (Onsite)

Clearance Requirement: Active or Interim Secret Clearance

Work Schedule: 4x10 hour days

Apex Systems is seeking two Kubernetes Developers to support a classified Navy project focused on modernizing high-performance applications into a secure, containerized private cloud. This role offers the opportunity to work hands-on with Kubernetes (K3s), Podman, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux in a controlled lab environment.

Responsibilities:

• Re-architect monolithic applications into microservices using K3s
• Containerization using Podman, Helm, YAML
• Collaborate on CI/CD efforts with GitLab (no direct pipeline development)
• Troubleshoot and understand legacy code in C++, Java, and Python
• Configure and support up to 150 containers per application
• Advanced Linux (RedHat) configuration and kernel-level troubleshooting
• Support secure deployments in air-gapped environments
• Apply strong networking knowledge with Kubernetes CNI integrations
• Work closely with a small development team and DevOps engineers

Required Experience:

• 5+ years in a DevOps role
• Strong Kubernetes (K3s) and microservices background
• Python scripting and C++ or Java experience
• Deep Linux knowledge (RedHat)
• Familiarity with GitLab, Helm, YAML, Podman
• Experience with secure, air-gapped systems
• Networking and container communication expertise
• Understanding of DevSecOps and cloud migration

Preferred:

• Experience in private or public cloud environments
• Security+ or similar certifications
• GPU/CPU-intensive workload experience
• Familiarity with Istio Service Mesh

Team Structure:

• Two openings: Senior (10-20+ yrs) and Mid-Level (5-10+ yrs)
• Join a development team of 5-6 engineers
