We are hiring a Senior Power Electronics Design Engineer , within the Electric Systems and Components (ESC) Network of Excellence Team in our global Corporate Advanced Technologies organization. Our organization’s role is to identify, develop, deliver, and deploy leading-edge technologies to our businesses that enable product and service growth and enhancement.

Job Summary

As the Senior Design Engineer, you will play an important role in product development in Trane Technologies’ HVAC systems and accelerating electrification of the portfolio. This position will involve working with multi-disciplinary Subject Matter Experts in addition to interacting with global teams to leverage capabilities in areas of product development and application. This position will directly support key enterprise initiatives of electrification and decarbonization to meet sustainability goals of 1GT CO2e reductions by 2030. This role will Influence technical direction through external partners, relationships, and by demonstrating applicability of new tech in the product portfolio

This position has been designated as a Hybrid work schedule with work performed onsite 3 days each week.

Travel Requirements As a key member of the Power Electronics Corporate Research group, the
Power Electronics Design Engineer may be required to travel periodically
up to 15% domestically

Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge in design and optimization of one or more of the following power electronic circuit topologies: motor drive, active power filters/front end, dc-dc converter, AC/DC converters, buck/boost converter, PFC etc.
  • Advanced understanding of motor control algorithms and general closed loop control concepts.
  • Experience in electrical system modelling using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, PSIM etc.
  • Experience working in application and testing of motor drives on complex electromechanical systems.
  • Full-cycle product development experience from concept development to manufacturing readiness and field trials.
  • Experience launching products that meet UL or CE agency standards.
  • Strong demonstration of power electronic hardware development and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment, author test plans, coordinate testing with lab staff and reviewing results.
  • Must be self-motivated, willing to take initiative, meeting goals and deadlines, and adept at report writing and presenting technical information to a wide audience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required with good interpersonal skills, able to express concepts and ideas with clarity.
  • Professional experience of leading major projects workflows, mentoring or coaching junior engineers, and presenting to leadership.
    Desired:
  • Mastery of power electronics such as motor drives, and active power
    filters
  • Detailed knowledge of power semiconductor devices specification and operation such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, SiC and GaN.
  • Experience with Rapid Control Prototyping based platforms such as Speedgoat, Opal-RT, dSPACE.
  • Experience and familiarity working in a research-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

1. Lead hardware development efforts for Power Electronic components for HVAC applications such as DC-DC, AC-DC and DC-AC.
2. Lead efforts in transient and dynamic modelling of power electronics in HVAC electrical architectures studying interaction with power source and load systems.
3. Lead the design validation and productization from early prototyping through manufacturing hand-off.
4. Lead efforts to optimize hardware designs for performance, cost, packaging, and thermal characteristics

5. Govern and lead design reviews through processes such as FMEA, DFMEA, and Risk Analysis.
6. Guide overall component choices for system design employing industry wide best practices.
7. Work with cross functional teams in areas such as HW, CAD, Mechanical Design, Thermal Design, etc.
8. Collaborate with other design architects and design teams to leverage common solutions across the businesses.
9. Lead and author detailed requirements specifications at various levels of power conversion equipment.
10. Perform design reviews and compliance to agency standards such as UL or IEC.
11. Build and maintain relationships with key suppliers of solutions.
12. Build and maintain relationships with key external partners, universities and National Labs.
13. Identify opportunities for utilization of emerging PE technologies in HVAC applications.
14. Develop project plans, prioritize tasks, and provide regular project updates.
15. Author Lab test plans, conduct testing, analyze and interpret results
and execute design updates based on the results.

What you will bring:

Minimum:

  • A minimum of bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering.
  • At least 5 years’ professional experience in Power Electronics domain
  • with majority of experience in product development is required.
  • Expert knowledge of key concepts – control systems, power conversion, motors, hardware design, and modeling
  • 4. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.

Desired:

  • Master’s or PhD degree is preferred with a focus on Power Electronics or Controls.
  • Demonstrated thought leadership and innovation in electrified systems and components
  • Knowledge of residential, commercial, and transport HVAC products, systems and processes.
  • Highly capable of performing independently and/or coordinating group efforts for complex, advanced engineering tasks.

Compensation:

Base Pay Range: $75,000 - $113,000+

This base pay range is based on US national averages. Actual base pay could be a result of seniority, merit , and geographic location where the work is performed.
