Primary Objectives
The Diesel/Heavy Equipment Mechanic is a key line-level position responsible for performing work of moderate difficulty in diagnosing, repairing, and servicing a variety of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. This job description is not an all-inclusive list of the duties and responsibilities of this position. Essential Functions
- Responsible for facilitating Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections and maintaining DOT compliance.
- Repairs and replaces damaged or worn parts, including tire changes.
- Responsible for performing welding needs associated with maintaining and/or servicing equipment.
- Dismantles and reassembles heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools.
- Tests mechanical equipment after repair to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers specifications.
- Communicates effectively with the Foreman-Mechanic Shop to operate within budget parameters.
- Responsible for creating and maintaining all service records as assigned for Heavy Equipment.
- Responds to road service calls and performs towing services as needed.
- Performs duties and assignments as administered by the internal Maintenance Control Software System (EMAINT) and via the EMAINT program services, functions, and activities as per Public Works standard operating procedures
- Communicates effectively with the Foreman-Mechanic Shop to complete assigned tasks.
- Responsible for providing Heavy Equipment mechanic services for Public Works as needed.
- Coordinates with management for necessary outside repair bids and monitors the competency and cost efficiency of outside repair work/vendors.
- Performs necessary repairs, overhauls, and maintenance on farm equipment.
- Checks lights, brake operation, and adjusts according to specifications.
- Responds to emergency field request for needed repairs.
- Analyzes whether a repair can be successfully completed in-house and when an outside vendor must be contracted.
- Coordinates with the appropriate management for any/all outside repair bids and monitors the competency and cost efficiency of outside repair work/vendors in accordance with the Procurement and Fiscal Policies and Procedures.
- Performs preventive maintenance and service on tractor trucks, and heavy equipment.
- Completes overall vehicle inspection and submits completed work order to the supervisor.
- Ensures safe effective repair, replacement, maintenance of all heavy equipment.
- Prioritizes work and coordinates with the appropriate Management.
- Provides daily direction and assignments for the Diesel/Heavy Equipment Mechanic Assistant.
- Assists the Automotive Mechanics as needed.
- Maintains and tracks expenses to ensure budget parameters are being maintained.
- Maintains a safe and clean work area.
- Responsible for servicing equipment after hours or on weekends in the event of equipment failure.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate person.
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Four (4) years employment experience in diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and servicing equipment in general.
- Three (3) years experience with the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment required.
- Three (3) years experience with dump truck repair, maintenance, or operations required.
- Knowledge of diesel and gasoline powered equipment required.
- Must possess a Class A commercial drivers license (CDL). Must have an insurable driving record according to Tribal insurance guidelines.
- Ability to work odd and irregular hours, as needed.
- Must successfully pass the required criminal and character background check.
- Ability to travel and participate in required training, leadership development, and other events.
- Ability to perform all duties and responsibilities of this position adequately and successfully.
- Must be people oriented and relate well to people from diverse backgrounds.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of dump truck maintenance and repair preferred.
- Knowledge of basic welding and burning skills.
- Must be knowledgeable with computers and computer-based diagnostics.
- Knowledge of and ability to inspect equipment and maintain Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance required.
- Knowledge and ability to complete general mechanical duties, service vehicles and equipment, i.e., front end loaders, backhoes, farm tractors, buses, vans, bush hogs, box blades, etc.
- Ability to understand and complete written and verbal instructions.
- Must possess hand tools necessary to perform job tasks.
- Formal industrial equipment or maintenance training and/or certification preferred.
- Must be in good physical condition with the ability to sit, stand walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, and twist for an extended period of time as well as climb, lift, hold, and move objects weighing a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.

- The starting pay will depend on factors such as experience level and skillset.
