Summary

General Excavating is an award-winning contractor serving public and private owners throughout the state of Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming. General Excavating specializes in the construction of; underground utilities, natural gas distribution, environmental remediation, excavation shoring, directional drilling, hydro-excavation, and heavy civil construction of bridge and concrete structures.

General Excavating is searching for a highly motivated Rig Welder in our Natural Gas division. The Welder will be responsible for performing welding tasks to ensure the integrity and safety of pipeline systems, working in compliance with industry standards, codes, and safety regulations. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of welding techniques, materials, and safety procedures, with a commitment to delivering high-quality workmanship. The ideal candidate will have experience with gas distribution systems, a strong attention to detail, and a commitment to safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Ensure all welds meet project specifications, safety standards, and industry codes (such as ASME, API, and AWS).
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, and welding procedure specifications (WPS) to determine project requirements.
  • Set up and operate stick welding equipment and other welding tools, ensuring proper settings and operation.
  • Conduct inspections of welds to verify quality, including visual inspections, non-destructive testing (NDT), and x-ray reviews.
  • Set up and operate tapping and stopping equipment safely.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, always following safety protocols and environmental regulations.
  • Collaborate with other crew members to ensure the timely and safe completion of pipeline construction, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and use personal protective equipment (PPE), including welding helmets, gloves, and protective clothing.
  • Monitor and adjust welding parameters to ensure strong, high-quality welds.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
  • Troubleshoot and repair welds as needed, ensuring repairs are done in accordance with industry standards.
  • Manage welding equipment, materials, and tools for the rig, ensuring that all necessary supplies are on hand and operational.
  • Work with the crew to ensure that all welding-related tools and equipment are maintained and repaired as necessary.
  • Ensure that the rig is properly stocked with necessary consumables such as welding rods, gas tanks, protective gear, and other welding-related supplies.
  • Adhere to all company policies, safety procedures, and regulatory compliance requirements. Maintain documentation per customer requirements.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Welder (e.g., AWS, ASME, or other relevant certifications).

Certificates and Licensing

  • Must have a valid drivers license with clean driving record.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance. Ability to read a tape measure and convert inches into tenths.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving multiple variables in standardized situations.
