Position Summary: The Equipment Manager / Mechanic is responsible for overseeing the golf course’s entire equipment fleet, ensuring that all machinery is maintained, repaired, and ready for daily use. This role combines hands-on mechanical work with equipment inventory management, training, and coordination with the Superintendent to keep the course in optimal playing condition.

Reports to: Golf Course Superintendent

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance & Repair

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair all golf course equipment, including mowers, utility carts, tractors, small engines, and specialty turf tools.

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to maximize equipment life and reduce downtime.

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems.

  • Sharpen, adjust, and set cutting units to ensure superior turf quality.

  • Weld, fabricate, and modify equipment as necessary.

Fleet & Inventory Management

  • Maintain accurate service and repair logs for each piece of equipment.

  • Track parts and supply inventory, placing orders as needed to avoid work delays.

  • Recommend equipment replacement schedules and assist in purchasing new units.

  • Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations regarding fuel, oil, and chemical storage.

Staff Training & Support

  • Train maintenance staff on proper operation, care, and basic troubleshooting of equipment.

  • Monitor operator practices to minimize misuse and damage.

  • Provide backup operation of turf equipment during peak workloads or staff shortages.

Safety & Shop Management

  • Keep the maintenance shop organized, clean, and hazard-free.

  • Adhere to OSHA safety standards and facility safety policies.

  • Dispose of waste materials in compliance with environmental regulations.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical/trade school certification preferred.

  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical repair (golf course, landscaping, or heavy equipment preferred).

  • Knowledge of gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, and electrical systems.

  • Proficiency in reel and bedknife grinding and adjustment.

  • Welding and fabrication skills a plus.

  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.

  • Ability to lift 75 lbs and work in varied weather conditions.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

Work Environment
  • Primarily in the maintenance shop, with periodic outdoor work.

  • Exposure to noise, fumes, grease, dust, and varying temperatures.

  • Early morning hours; occasional weekend or holiday work during peak season.
