ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Work under the supervision of an assigned supervisor to fabricate and install signs and markings for traffic control. Installs and erects street signs according to sketches, standard drawings, or design plans. Uses hand and power tools to erect sign poles and metal sign support structures. Operates silk screen and baking machine to fabricate signs according to specifications. Sets machine speed and makes adjustments according to type of design being printed. Cuts, places, and secures specified length of screening materials over frame. Operates striping equipment to paint traffic control lines on pavement. Removes various pavement markings using heavy equipment grinders. Installs hot thermoplastic, powders, and cold plastic film on streets. Examines printed objects for defects. Mixes paints according to standard formulas. Cleans tools, silk screen, and other equipment using brush and appropriate cleaning solvents. Drives heavy truck to haul materials and equipment while signs and pavement markings for traffic control.
OTHER FUNCTIONS: Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires ability to operate silk screening and baking machines, paint striping truck, and post driver. Must be able to read sketches and design plans. Must be able to examine painted objects for defects. Requires ability to communicate with workers and supervisors. Must be able to operate a heavy Truck and other painting and lifting equipment. Requires the ability to perform manual work which will involve reaching, handling, crouching, balancing, and lifting equipment, materials, parts, or supplies, which can weigh up to 50 lbs. and 100 lbs. with assistance.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed outdoors and in a shop-like environment. May be exposed to various weather conditions, paint fumes, dust, chemicals, traffic, and noise. Travels between shop and various work sites throughout the city.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Journeyman Painter or three (3) years' experience in all phases of painting. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee (or equivalent out-of-state) Commercial Driver License and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment. May be required to pass a battery of skills tests as deemed necessary by Human Resources.
