POSITION TITLE: Urban Planner/Designer

POSITION DUTIES:

Work under the supervision and at the direction of more senior Urban Planners and Designers, Architects, and Project

Managers, as part of a large and multi-disciplinary team, including consultants, local government officials, healthcare and

higher education institutions and local communities;

Under the direction of a supervisor, evaluate, select and utilize design and planning techniques, procedures and criteria;

Study land and buildings, analyzing their current use, and make recommendations for their future use;

Design a variety of open and built spaces, either by creating new designs or revising and improving existing ones, including

working on small individual streetscapes, community parks and public spaces, office parks and campuses, and hospital

spaces;

Create illustrations using artistic and graphic skills, convert vision into conceptual drawings using hand drawn sketches,

tools such as computer-aided design (CAD) software, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), 3D modeling software, as

well as converting spatial data for 2-D to 3-D workflows and working with the Adobe Creative Suite;

Obtain an understanding of the needs of people/clients who will be using the space to be designed through research and

analysis. Use findings to design spaces accounting for cultural, environmental, social, economic, spatial, psychological,

and physical factors;

Use communication skills, empathy, and knowledge to negotiate with and influence people to make better informed

decisions about successfully planned spaces;

Educate and engage communities involved with the planning of their local region or public and private spaces;

Prepare reports including writing, producing graphics and performing design analyses and alternative scenarios, for large-

and small-scale development projects;

Develop urban design guidelines, feasibility studies, and impact analyses for a range of scales, from individual parcels to

city-scale;

Manage multiple project schedules and deliverables concurrently;

Work with the wider planning team/studio to ensure best planning practices are followed;

Interface with client stakeholders to learn clients' objectives, design ideas, budgetary requirements, and any specific

requirements for the project, working and communicating with engineers, construction representatives, and other

professionals from the client-side or with third party companies engaged in the project; and

Research and follow zoning laws, building codes, accessibility requirements, and environmental studies when designing

and building architectural works.

May telecommute up to 1 day per week.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Master's Degree in Architecture Studies, Urban Planning, Urban Design, City & Regional Planning, or a related field, or the foreign degree equivalent and three years of experience performing urban planning and/or architectural design in an urban setting. Experience must include each of the following:

3 years of experience applying principles of urban design and planning, site research and analysis, conceptual site design, massing studies, geospatial analysis and planning tools development;

3 years of experience with neighborhood scale planning and design and site programming;

3 years of experience creating plan documents, graphics, and reports utilizing Adobe InDesign;

3 years of experience developing 2-D and 3-D computer modeling concepts, using Rhinoceros/Grasshopper, Revit, Sketch Up, ArcGIS Pro, Adobe Suite, AutoCAD, PowerPoint and Excel;

3 years of experience communicating planning and design concepts using hand drawn sketches;

3 years of experience writing architectural and urban design guidelines, feasibility studies, development and growth scenarios, impact analyses utilizing research, analysis, growth modeling and impact assessments;

3 years of experience performing code research and developing supporting code documents, including code plans and summaries;

2 years of experience planning level data analysis using GIS and MS Excel; and

1 year of experience with community engagement and planning policy.

Experience and education may be gained concurrently

SALARY: The annual base pay range for this role is $79,643 - $92,441. Actual compensation within this range for successful candidates will be carefully determined based on a number of factors, including their skills, qualifications and experience. LOCATION OF EMPLOYMENT: 40 hours/week in Seattle, WA. May telecommute up to 1 day per week.
