Senior Mechanical Engineer positions plan, direct and supervise the work of a professional engineering staff in the review of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, hydraulic, and other mechanical and electrical system plans of residential, commercial, industrial buildings and/or other City facilities (such as water, water reclamation, wastewater treatment plants and landfills) for compliance with applicable City, State and Federal health, safety and energy conservation regulations, and sustainable building systems; research and determine acceptability of new systems and methods of construction; attend meetings and make presentations; prepare information bulletins; develop and write applicable codes; prepare reports and correspondence; perform acoustical reviews; train, evaluate and rate the work performance of subordinate personnel; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:

  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Senior Mechanical Engineer employees with valid State of California registration as a Mechanical Engineer are eligible for 15% additional pay.

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

REGISTRATION: Registration as a Professional Mechanical Engineer with the State of California.

EXPERIENCE: Four years of full-time professional-level mechanical engineering experience. Qualifying professional-level experience MUST include checking building plans for compliance with mechanical and plumbing codes and standards; calculating, reviewing and verifying mechanical adequacy; and providing information to engineers, architects and contractors regarding plan modification, building regulations and mechanical/plumbing design issues.

NOTES:

  • A Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering may be substituted for a MAXIMUM of one year of the required experience.
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License may be required at the time of hire.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Certification as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Energy Auditor (CEA), and/or Certified Building Systems or Heating Ventilating and Air-Conditioning System Commissioning Professional.
  • Experience in managing and monitoring projects and performance of contractors, designers and/or equipment suppliers.
  • Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) AP certification.
  • Supervisory ability/experience.
