EO Traffic Control

Job Description:

The incumbent, under the guidance of the Manager of the Traffic Control Department, operates equipment safely and efficiently to maintain city road striping, pavement markings, traffic signs and related equipment with the intent of providing the safest means possible for the motoring public to navigate throughout the city.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Other duties may be assigned. Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.

  1. Drive/operate various trucks and equipment as assigned.

  2. Operates and maintains thermoplastic striping equipment for the application of striping on roadways.

  3. Lift, carry, load and unload construction items including pavement marking supplies, signs, etc.

  4. Prepare, clean and sweep work area.

  5. Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of assigned equipment.

  6. Inspect, install and remove pavement markings as needed.

  7. Install and remove construction signs and traffic control devices as needed.

  8. Assist in compiling road striping status.

  9. Keep inventory of all parts, material and equipment related to job assignments.

  10. Install, repair and replace all regulatory and traffic management signs as necessary.

  11. Must have a reliable form of communication in order to respond to after-hours calls to work.

  12. Must live within a 30 minute drive to 3900 Kelley Hwy for quick response to emergency conditions.

  13. Must participate in stand-by rotation.

  14. Must possess a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation.

  15. Accurate record keeping and thorough documentation is a must.

  16. Assist in major repair of damaged traffic signals.

  17. Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EO in Training:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and must obtain required CDL within 9 months of hire. Must sit for written exam within 3 months of hire; must pass written exam within 6 months of hire; and must pass driving exam within 9 months of hire.
  • No experience necessary. On the job training for transitioning to higher EO levels.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOI:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have valid Class B CDL w/air brake endorsement.
  • No experience necessary.
  • May be required to operate: chainsaw/jackhammer/ dump trucks.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOII:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have valid Class A or B CDL w/air brake endorsement.
  • 6 months previous experience in operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOIII:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have valid Class B or C CDL w/air brake endorsement upon hire. Must have or be able to obtain a valid Class A CDL w/air brake and tanker endorsement with 9 months of hire.
  • 12 months previous experience in operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department. Problem solving, speed and accuracy are required to perform the duties of this position. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required. Must acquire ATSSA Flagger Certification Training, IMSA Work Zone and Sign and Pavement Marking technician Level 1 within two years of accepting position. Course availability may create an extension of this time.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently stand, walk, talk and hear. Occasionally sit, use hands to handle objects and reach with hands and arms. The incumbent must also stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is also required to use the sense of smell on a regular basis. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance and peripheral vision. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also required.

The employee is occasionally required to lift more than 100 pounds.

While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions and is required to work near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places. The incumbent is also exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The incumbent is also at risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
