This position will play an integral role in making long-term improvements on golf courses and advancing environmental sustainability practices. This is responsible specialized manual work in the performance of golf course improvement, construction, and maintenance activities. Employees are expected to perform a wide variety of golf course construction and natural area restoration functions, including restoring and maintaining greens, trees, fairways, roughs, natural areas, and related course areas.

The work includes laboring tasks, equipment operation, the use of hand tools and power equipment for golf course improvement work, and the routine maintenance of tools and equipment. Work involves pruning, planting, and assisting with the removal of trees on city golf courses. In addition, the work involves the performance of a wide variety of functions specific to horticultural plantings, including shrubs, perennials, and annuals. At times the work will include assisting with training and guiding the work of a crew of seasonal staff as assigned. Work is done independently or as part of a team or crew, and is directed and reviewed by a Golf Course Equipment Operator 3, Operations Leadworker, or Golf Operations Supervisor for conformance with established procedures and/or objectives.

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position with an anticipation duration of up to 2 years.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Golf Course Restoration Work

  • Build and improve golf course features, including greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, and natural areas through preparation of soil, including cutting and finishing grades, preparing sub-grades, moving earth, and spreading materials, using a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Renovate golf course turf spaces, including grading, seeding, mulching, watering, vertical mowing, aerification, and top dressing, using standard golf course equipment.
  • Install, repair, and operate irrigation systems.
  • Excavate trenches for specific projects, including irrigation and drainage.
  • Haul and deliver project materials and equipment.
  • Shoot grades on projects, using laser levels.
  • Perform concrete flat work, including site preparation, mixing, and pouring concrete.

Maintenance and Establishment of Natural Areas

  • Manage natural meadows and invasive species, using mowing, chainsaws, and herbicides.
  • Operate automotive and maintenance equipment such as tractors, plows, mowers, fork lift, toolcat, and blowers.
  • Monitor, inventory, and keep accurate record of native plant species.
  • Monitor park land for encroachments.

Improvement of Urban Forest within Golf Courses

  • Assist with removal of trees.
  • Prune trees using chainsaws and hand tools.
  • Coordinate and prepare plant material for installation.
  • Install plant material using various hand tools and power equipment.
  • Grub stumps and re-landscape affected areas.
  • Maintain adequate records as required.
  • Perform all other tree work as required.

Preventative Maintenance of Parks Equipment

  • Perform preventative maintenance of any equipment used in daily operations.
  • Clean equipment and vehicles as needed.
  • Transport equipment and vehicles for use, maintenance, storage, etc.
  • Report damages and/or repairs to Supervisor or mechanic as appropriate.

Other related work as required or assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • One (1) year of varied manual and semi-skilled work in landscaping, grounds maintenance, construction, or other related outdoor labor experience.
  • OR-

Two (2)years experience in applying the following:

  • Types and uses of common hand and power tools and equipment used in related golf course maintenance, public works maintenance, and grounds care work.
  • Natural area restoration and tree care practices and procedures with an emphasis on native landscapes and sustainable practices.
  • Precautions and equipment necessary to perform the work safely AND;

Familiarity with the following:

  • Landscape construction techniques.
  • Plant materials, methods of care, planting, pruning, and removal techniques.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of appointment. The successful candidate must have passed the written portion of the relevant Department of Transportation testing process by the start date. A condition of continued employment is passage of the skills portion of the test and obtaining the required operator's license within six (6) months.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Wisconsin State Pesticide Certification within the first six (6) weeks of employment. A condition of continued employment is maintaining the Certification.
  • Must maintain adequate attendance.

Physical Requirements:

  • Employees in this position must be able to lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds frequently (bags of seed or trash barrels) and must be capable of lifting 100 pounds maximum weight.
  • A high percentage of work outdoors in all types of weather while walking and standing.
  • Work may involve walking over uneven surfaces, reaching, climbing, kneeling, and stooping.
  • Must be able to frequently bend, twist, squat, and reach for extended periods of time.
